Ramon Vázquez is the new bench coach. Left his job managing in Puerto Rico to focus on his new gig. I’m a bit surprised by this as I was expecting Varitek to be next-in-line. Is there anything out there that suggests Varitek can’t handle a managerial role? In my eyes, he would be the one to take over if Cora ever gets bagged.

I think Congusgambler 33 was just saying that he wants the organization go back to valuing plate discipline and OBP. It's obvious to me (and should be to you, too) that he's applying a little sarcasm to emphasize his point when he suggests that our guys routinely swing at pitches a foot outside the zone. Listening to Cora in interviews since he became the manager in 2018, it seemed like he was bringing a different mindset with his "Do Damage" approach. He wants more aggressiveness. This is a reason I enjoyed watching Casas so much after he was called up. He doesn't chase. He's the Bronze God of Walks. I think Cora was trying to say do damage with a pitch in the strike zone even if it's early in the count. The theory was that a batter might get one cookie in an atbat and if the hitter sees it, even if its early on the count, go after it, as opposed to taking a called strike, falling behind in the count and hoping for the next cookie to come in that atbat that never happens. That's not the same as swing at anything that moves, which is what the Sox approach at the plate seemed to morph into. Walks are great. Passivity at the plate not as much. I think that's what Cora started out preaching. Somewhere along the way the message got warped. It may be decades later, but Ted Williams wa and still is the most intelligent hitter that ever played. His take on the most important aspect of hitting? "Get a good pitch to hit." Easier said than done. The most elusive skill in hitting, and one that is almost impossible to affect to any great degree, is discernment of the eventual location of a pitch once it leaves the pitcher's hand relative to the strike zone in general and one's particular happy zones in particular. The hitters that can do it better and faster are the ones most likely to succeed at the highest levels.

Well let me answer a question with a question - why do you think that other than that he's the most high-profile former player in the staff/impressions you had of him as a player?
