Minor League Free Agents 2022-23

Ok, I'm confused. What's the point of adding Tapia as it cuts into their available $? Dont they need a middle infielder more? So they have Yoshida, Verdugo, Duvall, Tapia, and Refsnyder? And I guess Hernandez? Doesnt bode well for Duran.

I'm guessing Tapia made a mistake and meant to post a WooSox logo

Rumors brewing that they signed Raimel Tapia. Not sure if it is a Majors or minor league deal.

Tapia is the lefty OF bench bat who can go get it in CF
I’d imagine Duran is gonna get moved unless they plan on throwing him down in Worcester to see if he has made adjustments

At this point they need Verdugo’s bat They’ll probably roll with Verdugo/Yoshida/Duvall/Tapia/Refsnyder as the OF to open the season Hell the plan could be a Duvall/Tapia CF platoon. He’s been slightly better against RHP than LHP throughout his career Lineup is gonna be different on a day to day basis I’d imagine Can’t be a good sign for Duran i would imagine

Tapia is the lefty OF bench bat who can go get it in CF I’d imagine Duran is gonna get moved unless they plan on throwing him down in Worcester to see if he has made adjustments A comparison between Tapia and Greg Allen, a similar player who was signed as an NRI. All figures are career per 600 PA (Tapia has 1858 and Allen 800). sWAR is situation-adjusted.
Name WAR sWAR SB CS Tapia 0.5 0.7 17 5 Allen 1.4 1.0 34 6 Tapia is coming off a typical season for him (.4 / .8).
Now, do you think Tapia was signed to an MLB contract or as MRI? And don't we already have a roster crunch where we're likely trading Brasier and Ort, or doing something more dramatic?
(Take home lesson: just because you've heard of a guy doesn't mean he's any good.)
This changes nothing. However, that they have added three NRI OFers (Narcisco Crook being the 3rd) and just one 2B or SS (Niko Goodrum) is a strong suggestion that they'll be trying Duran at 2B. He's been -12 per 150 G in CF.
Speaking of which, Duran is a guy with awesome physical tools who has 335 career PA and a -1.4 WAR per 600, although situationally it's "only" -0.8. And his job is going to be, sit and watch other guys play?

Went 9/30 at Fenway with a bunch of extra base hits. I think this is a very smart pick up. Last year we were so thin in the OF it was embarrassing. Go into the season with 5 OFs and let Cora run the splits.

I've always had the impression that they like Wong more than the box scores would suggest you should, and now the box scores are saying Wong is a solid back up.

If they didn’t at least think Wong could handle it, I think they would have gotten a better backup than Alfaro.

Just for poops, back in the day when there were more rankings that people paid attention to, the big three catchers were Alfaro, Swihart and Sanchez and Alfaro was usually ranked higher than the other two.

Add Tapia to the mix with Allen and Duran competing for the last bench spot. Good depth add.

I know people are gunna go berserk, but with the changes… esp. bigger bases and limited throws… I think we could be looking at increased importance of BA for guys with speed. If a guy like Tapia could hit .270 but steal at will, having limited power becomes less important. A single and a steal is as good as a double.

Yeah, there has been a lot of sh*tting on his game, because he puts the ball in play, doesn't walk, or strikeout much, but with the shift going away guys like him are going to get on base and I like the move. I'd much rather see a guy make contact then swing and miss at 3 straight outside pitches, or high fastballs (Looking at you Bobby D). Added bonus, he can actually play defense so he could be an excellent late game defensive replacement anywhere in the outfield.

These minor league deals have looked pretty solid so far. Not that anyone goes into the offseason thinking "my biggest hope is that they sign some intriguing NRIs" but it's still nice to see.

Tapia is a guy I've weirdly been a fan of for a long time, could do a lot lot worse for a minor league deal than a guy that can come up and make decent enough contact with some speed if needed.

Yes the Marlins got him in the Realmuto trade. He was supposed to be a big get. The Marlins soured on him pretty quickly and ended up dumping him for cash his value was that low. So I wouldn't be counting on to much from him.

So I wouldn't be counting on to much from him. Back in the day, Tapia was also a big deal: From 2017 "The 60 hit tool slapped on Tapia by MLB.com is quite rare and valuable, but some growth in power (currently a 40) would allow him to do real damage. Keith Law of ESPN.com was actually even higher on Tapia, who he ranked 58th in baseball recently: 'Tapia has incredible hand-eye coordination and plus bat speed, which allows him to hit like he does despite a hilariously wide stance at the plate that would sink most hitters. His plate coverage is excellent, with his only significant hole being front and back if his timing is off. He’s a plus runner who has really not had enough success on the bases for his speed, and he is an average defender in center who’ll be bumped to a corner by David Dahl. Tapia could be someone’s center fielder, but he’ll probably end up in right field for the Rockies, and Coors Field is a friendly place for a high-contact hitter such as Tapia, who should be good for 35-40 doubles a year as a Rockie with high batting averages but mediocre OBPs, which makes him a very good regular but probably less than a star.'" www.purplerow.com/2017/1/31/14449704/colorado-rockies-prospects-raimel-tapia-ranking-purp-2017

Funky sidearm delivery from the left side. Maybe a Driveline guy?
