Perhaps the WBC warrents its own thread. This is not directed specifically towards Yoshida but I will add my 2 cents here for now.
I like the concept of the WBC and do NOT begrudge anyone who wants to play for their country. The downside is that makes for a disjointed MLB spring training. For teams like the Red Sox who will have many new faces (Yoshida, possibly others), this becomes more challenging as they will be trying to sort out positions, and build team climate, etc.
I am pretty sure Story is planning to play. Any other Red Sox?

Pretty sure Devers is playing for DR, and Jansen is possibly playing for Netherlands

US: Story PR: Kiké DR: Devers Japan: Yoshida Canada: Pivetta Mexico: Verdugo Rafaela has been working out with Team Netherlands but probably needs to make that team. I'd presume Jansen is a candidate for them as well. By the way, on the Depth Chart page, where the second column usually just denotes NRIs after the Rule 5 draft, we've changed it to be a Spring Training ("ST") column that also denotes confirmed WBC participants. soxprospects.com/org.htm

Just was reminded that Ronaldo Hernandez and Rio Gomez (as well as Jeter Downs) are on the preliminary Colombia roster.

It's going to be interesting to see how the WBC affects guys fighting for roster spots. Jorge Alfaro for example is a guy who could use as many looks on camp as possible if he wants to make the team out of camp. Duran is another guy who strikes me as fighting for a spot. Perhaps that's why his first opt out isn't until June. By the way, I believe we've got the full list on the Fall/Winter page www.soxprospects.com/fall-winter.htm

Casas played against Yoshida in the last WBC and had good things to say. The rest of us should be able to get our first look.
The Dominican team, wow !!!

This is a bad year, Sox-wise, for WBC. They really need a full spring training. This is especially so after watching a veteran team that had (mostly) played for Cora before be so sloppy, unthinking and generally unprepared in the first six weeks of last season.
Always glad to watch bonus baseball, but like others, I worry about injuries.

Ever since Nomar, I always check what exotic names look like spelled backwards.
Sick move, Mrs. Loopstok...
EDIT: Maybe his dad was a big fan of "Stripes" -- "Just don't call him Francis!!!"

I don't mind guys playing in the WBC versus spring training. Guys don't need spring training to get in physical shape anymore, and the higher level of competition could actually help a guy like Yoshida get comfortable more quickly than spring training games might.
