If cutting Zappe was a move to clear up a spot for this OL reshuffling, why is Matthew Slater here?

Zappe cleared waivers - all the Pats cuts did. Assumption he is on Pats practice squad.

Bailey Zappe signed.
Zero players claimed from Patriots, a testament to their roster.

Zappe cleared waivers - all the Pats cuts did. Assumption he is on Pats practice squad. For clarity, signing him to the PS is the ONLY move they can make with him right now (assuming they aren't cutting someone from the 53 which . . . no). If/when they move someone from the 53 to IR (I think that can happen at 4PM today), they can sign players (either from the PS or the street) to fill any vacated spots.

Bailey Zappe signed. Zero players claimed from Patriots, a testament to their roster. Only 24 players in total were claimed. And that was across 16 teams. So if that's your metric, it's an indictment on exactly half the rosters in the league (including some that were thought of as DEFINITELY having more talent than New England). Meanwhile, NONE of the 100s of players waived were good enough to crack the Patriots 53. So what does that say? Of course, it's possible, that waiver claims at this part of the process are just not very common. Teams would rather work with their own guys than bringing in someone (to their 53) that they haven't worked with all offseason.,

Tracking the PS Signings:
Bailey Zappe Malik Cunningham Thyrick Pitts Jeremiah Pharms Joshuah Bledsoe Corliss Waitman
Also, Fagot reverts to IR after not being claimed as he was cut with an injury designation.

sports.yahoo.com/nfl-practice-squad-rules-salary-094451980.htmlHuge change in size of practice squad to 16, can keep upto 6 veterans with no exceptions, ten or more other guys have to be rookies or 2nd year guys. Players can be brought up 3 times before having to go on 53 roster, two per week max. My take, thank the heavens Zappe wasn't claimed, they now have 3 weeks to figure out the OL and make moves. Well closer to a month given first game is September 10th. You can't keep 11 OL guys, with 6 OTs, they just needed time to see about health and the two new guys. It worked, so congrats to Bill, I was rather worried, not going to lie.

Sounds like as many as 7 teams were interested in signing Zappe to the PS but he chose to sign with NE.
The risk was there but not without some merit. In order to be claimed, a team would have to put him on their 53-Man roster. For most teams, that means he's coming in to be the backup with only a week and a half to prepare. That's not an ideal situation for a team (I don't think a single QB was claimed, btw).
Sure there maybe a few teams who would carry 3 or could elevate someone from their PS until Bailey learned the playbook. But that's probably a VERY small # of teams who would've even considered such a move (and, clearly, nobody pulled the trigger).
Now the question will be whether he stays on PS or they sign him to the 53 later today/tomorrow.

Per Perry, Giles-Harris, Sokol, Montgomery and K Harris at practice so likely have signed to PS. A new TE (he thinks it might be Pharoah Brown whom Reiss had mentioned this am).
Reiff and Thornton missing so they continue to be IR candidates. Parker missing as well.

Also, Taylor Kyles reporting that Perkins still has a locker so even though he was absent today, he might be back on PS.

I like pharoah brown
Mostly because he’s huge and has a sick name. Has flashed a little against us iirc

Trading Strong and not being able to resign Taylor to practice squad has created a shortage at RB from a depth point of view. Your top 2 are rock solid, Montgomery can be a good receiving back, one injury and JAG Harris is playing. I'd like to see them bring in another RB with that last practice squad spot.

I thought JJ Taylor would be on the 53. He wouldn't sign for the PS. So, where is he now? Anyone know?

Pharms was part of the list of PSers that has already been out there so he's included in the 15 (FWIW Ty Montgomery, didn't answer whether he was on PS or 53 when asked - just saying that he was here and able to practice).
BTW - Pharms is 6-3/300 LBs and played on the interior of the DL so not sure why he's listed as an LB.
Anway, between the Active Roster and Practice Squad, the Pats have 67 out of 69 spots filled.
EDIT - So I never saw that Ferentz signed, but Reiss' post included him and not Pharms. So maybe he is your 68th (16th PSer if that's where Montgomery is).

It just sucks, his best path to playing time was here after the Strong trade. Issue with him, can you ever fully trust his blitz pickup at his size? I badly wanted to see him in a Danny Woodhead role.

Maybe it's foolish, I just don't care that much about JuJu with Douglas, then Boutte, along with Bourne having an unreal camp. Then Parker, Henry and Gesecki, the RB as receivers. I wonder if we become more explosive with him out.
