Great to see signs of vintage sale and if David Hamilton can learn how to get on base he’s gonna be a problem!! Seemed to be looking pretty good at SS, no? A LHH MI who can fly could have at least a future on the bench if he can hit a little. Would be awesome if he could learn some CF too, he could cover ground like nothing out there.

Not likely to be elite anywhere.
Field: Poor footwork and range and does not look comfortable at shortstop. Has a tendency to rush plays and has trouble fielding the ball on the run. At second base, is a bit robotic and only shows average hands. Footwork is sloppy there as well and it is unclear if he can stick there long-term. Speed and athleticism might be best suited for center field, where he has played a couple times in 2022. Potential below-average defender. Arm: Below-average arm strength. Has a quick release, but throws lack carry. Arm is best suited long-term for second base or an outfield corner.

I tweeted this but expect Valdez, Hamilton, Rafaela, Walter, and Murphy to be optioned in the next few days. After 3/15, if a player in MLB camp gets hurt, they need to be kept up and put on the MLB IL rather than optioned.
Murphy and Walter are both pitching Monday so I presume they go down after.

Bleis in the starting lineup today.
(Just now hitting me how much the WBC guys being gone might mess with us when we're down there later this week...)

Yes, thank you for pasting in the paragraph on what he looked like last year from this site. I did not phrase my comment right: I meant to ask whether he looked better this Spring than he looked last year. By noting that in a few plays he seemed to look "pretty good" this Spring, I was not asking whether he was "elite." The question remains whether he has improved a little on D so that, combined with his speed and LHH bat, he could at some time be an mlb backup.

Do we have a precedent of a guy without a single full season affiliate AB getting a start in spring training?

Especially ironic here since he summarily ignored the conventional scouting reports to try to make the case Rafaela had a ceiling of a 70 hit tool, but now all of a sudden the reports are gospel.

The question remains whether he has improved a little on D so that, combined with his speed and LHH bat, he could at some time be an mlb backup. I've seen most of the broadcast games. The little I've seen of him, a regular gig as a bench player seems unlikely. I don't see a whole lot of difference from last year. He's not horrific in the field but I think with the new shift rules, I can picture an up and down guy to cover for injuries. I can't remember seeing him in CF last year but I find it difficult to picture. Maybe Coco Crispish, speed but needs a relay team to get the ball back to the infield. He also said earlier that this year he's trying not to think HR every time up. That's a plus. Just my two cents. I don't mind differences in opinion. thegoodthebadthesox is a troll. ADD: It's not difficult to picture the possibility of a Dave Roberts post-season hero status.

Also hard to call it a "difference of opinion" when your dismissiveness is based on someone else's opinion (copying and pasting the SP scouting report).

Bleis in the starting lineup today. (Just now hitting me how much the WBC guys being gone might mess with us when we're down there later this week...) Look at the bright side. More Bleis. But when we're on the back fields, it's annoying when guys get pulled up. I didn't see Mayer for anything other than like 10 minutes of infield last year due to just bad luck (at Minnesota when I was at home one day, traveled for distantish Milb game one day, was pulled into the MLB park to hit for an Eovaldi bullpen the next, played in MLB game as a reserve the next, and I think off day the other or something?).

Do we have a precedent of a guy without a single full season affiliate AB getting a start in spring training? Don't know, but WBC creates a circumstance we haven't had since 2017. Duran, Verdugo, Yoshida (and to some extent, Kiké) being gone thins the outfield a fair amount. They're also kind of thin in the outfield in minor league camp. For guys truly ahead of Bleis and not up, it's Granberg, Dearden, Esplin, Jimenez, Sikes, Rosier, Decker and guys who also play infield like McDonough, Ferguson, and to some degree Paulino.

I guess that does make it tough. While Bleis and Mayer are in the MLB park the majority of the prospects you want to have a look at won't be so where do you go?

Knock on wood but what a ST for the prospects so far. A lot of really impressive stuff on the mound, in the field, and hitting.
Also I would not have thought that yellow guards would look that cool with red jerseys/socks, but it’s cool. Extra points for Bleis

What I love about this, and this is admittedly reading way too far into it, is that a 19 year old kid with no experience above complex ball is facing a very good MLB pitcher and isn't just trying to swing out of his shoes. It would be very easy for Bleis to go up there and just try to pull one 450 feet because he's playing with house money by even being there at this point, but really cool to see the poise.

Extra points for Bleis I'm just glad to see his face, which I barely saw earlier this month. ![](https://photos.smugmug.com/Spring-Training/Red-Sox-ST-March-6-2023/i-Tth5B2j/0/ec17cd33/M/20230306_0851-M.jpg)
