Didnt see it mentioned anywhere but I was watching the Sox Orioles game and it looked like Joely Rodriguez injured himself throwing a pitch. He was grabbing his right side. Didnt look good. I'd guess an IL stint? Guess they'd only have one bullpen lefty unless they somehow put Sherriff on the 40 man roster.

Sadly, weei switched over to NCAA bb before Chris could discuss who might take Joely's place after his injury today.

At this point should we start to be worried that Bobby Dalbec is the starting short stop in 2023? I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Chang and Hernandez are away playing for their country in the Classic. And Mondesi is still rehabbing an injury. Haha, I know. I meant that more as a statement sarcastically observing that once again Bobby Dalbec is playing SS. I suppose in todays world no one can ever be blamed for taking anyone serious lol. I am curious as to how he has looked out there. Purely for academic purposes.

OMG listening to the Tampa broadcast with an interview about artificial turf may well be the most boring thing I’ve ever heard. So... that's like watching the grass (not) grow! (Sorry I couldn't resist)

With the number of games Dalbec has played at SS, and Cora's comments in his presser Saturday, including talk that Dalbec has been taking grounders at 2b, I am more convinced that they will open the season with Dalbec as the MI backup. If it's just Tapia they are adding to the 26 and the 40, Ort could be the one they try to send to AAA, but if Wong is not ready and they need Alfaro (or Hamilton), I think they choose Dalbec over Chang, in the hope that they get to keep Chang, if unclaimed, at AAA with his permission, too. The whole Mondesi plan involves DFAing Chang sooner or later. It could be sooner.
I have not seen every inning, but Dalbec looks competent out there. With his size and limited range (his top speed may be fine but he's not that quick), there could be some "past a diving Jeter" moments. But I don't see Dalbec being the backup MI in April being a major weakness.
A trade involving Dalbec, Duran, Ort, Hamilton, etc would also solve the problem.

Even as maybe this site's biggest Dalbec believer I have to admit he was strangely close to awful at 1B. As I recall he flat out dropped a couple or more throws. Hard to fathom given his versatility. Casas already looks like the ideal player at 1B. The ability to turn errors into outs is the most valuable defensive tool in the bag at 1B and it's amplified when a team has a fielder like a Devers who has the ability to get to a lot of balls but also makes a significant amount of errant throws. Devers does not usually throw the ball into the stands. Most of his errant throws are high or wide or in the dirt but a Casas type can reach and catch most of them.

Might be to show teams that he's a little versatile for a bench, too. Having 4 RHB on the bench in Chang, Refsnyder, Dalbec, and Wong or switch hitting Alfaro would be kind of bad set up for the team. It would be nice to have a LH outfielder to give Yoshida some DH time, plus spell Duval on occasion.

Rob said you would discuss who might replace Joely right after the break but then the station went immediately to basketball. Care to share what you thought was going on air?

Alfaro looks pretty bad behind the plate, strong arm, but defensively looks like early career Gary Sanchez. More bullish on his bat than most, but he just isn’t a passable catcher

Right, there will be a LHH on the bench, either Duran who’s on the 40 or more likely Tapia who would need a spot.

More bullish on his bat than most, but he just isn’t a passable catcher He has a career .701 OPS. He's had a OPS under .700 from 2020-2022. Coupled with the terrible defense- I hope Wong makes the team. Alfaro should be depth.

Alfaro's issues cost you fewer runs than you'd think. Statcast has a catcher blocking leaderboard now and Alfaro was only two runs below average last year

Weird lineups today. What was the thought? "Let's play only guys who have no chance of making the team." Super encouraging outing from Bello.

Bello looked really good, nice to see even against some low level guys. Good to see. His change is nasty.

I think the plan for the Sox was to rest the starters today and then have them play Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday before the off day Thursday--that may have been from the radio broadcast.

I know…I know….small sample size….spring training, but Ort has pitched 6.1 innings and given up 4 HRs, and put 16 men on base. I think it is safe to say he can be a DFA who will not be taken (the Yankees are not snarky like DD and the Phillies who would take a player like Canon or Song with little to no chance of it working out). I think it is pretty obvious that he will be the subtraction if or when Tapia is added.

Maybe not Ort but somebody, anybody. That bullpen has worst in baseball potential.
