I want Valdez over Yu Chang. Yu Chang is the man of the people, though!

I prefer Chang over Valdez but it will be short lived because...Mondesi.
Sox can't trade him so the best case is a DFA trade. Building Chang's value might be wise.

Dalbec looks surprisingly playable at SS. If he can actually back that position up, he could earn himself a roster spot.

Ort rewarding his many soxprospects defenders.
(That is sarcasm, of course… I know there are no such beasts).

Houck hasn’t been fooling anyone this Spring.

Houck hasn’t been fooling anyone this Spring. A little concerning. They are crushing him today with HR's. Also, the Sox lineup is getting mowed down by the Braves pitchers. Houck out after 3 innings.

I have always preferred Houck in the pen.
The Sox may have a rough go the first week or two between starters not being ready and trying to figure out the best lineup. I am going to be happy if come mid-April they are just a few games out.

I would hope that when the key seven starter candidates are healthy, the odd men out are Houck (just best suited for the pen) and Paxton (can't rely on him to make it the full season).

The Sox would still be burdened with most of his salary, but I'd be fine with Paxton being DFA now. That would be a way to make a 40 man spot for Tapia. DFA Ort as well and add Sherrif to start the season.

On a positive note, Verdugo has looked good in right and threw out a runner at second base with a perfect throw right on the bag.

Houck hasn’t been fooling anyone this Spring. It's very possible that "fooling people" is the last thing he's concerned about during spring training.

Houck has a 3.22 ERA in 92 career regular season innings as a starter along with a 2.85 FIP, 3.39 xFIP. I'm not convinced he's best there in the long term but I'm not gonna freak out about a poor spring either.

His arm slot is all over the place which takes away life from his sinker and turns his slider into a cement mixer. Closest comp is Justin Masterson early career, those low 3/4 guys can have trouble staying on top of the ball. Question is when he’s going to iron that out…

Winchowski on the other hand looks so much better now that he has an actual breaking ball lol

Winck missing bats 👀👀👀
In re: Houck he had a wonky spring last year iirc. Had trouble locating. Once real game action hit he was mostly good. So I’m not overly concerned there…but we should keep an eye on it just in case

Last year, Winckowski got whiffs on 7.8% of his pitches. This spring, it's 8.5% on tracked pitches. Pivetta is at 14.4%, Kluber at 11.4%
Schreiber was 15.1% last year, 4.9% this spring on tracked pitches.
These are only tracked pitched, but each of these guys have have 80+ tracked this spring by statcast.
Houck has somehow evaded statcast all spring.
