Seems that only one inning, 15 pitches, from Robertson prepared this game for disaster, as well as more awful clutch hitting. I am going to be having nightmares of watching Masa, Verdugo and McGuire rolling over grounders to second.

One thing is very clear - Rafaela is not intimidated by any of this. He is carrying himself with great maturity already - playing with confidence, playing well...and maybe most important, seems to be having fun. Reminds me a lot of Mookie, Xander and Raffy when they got their first tastes. Makes me think of Freddy Lynn in Sept 1974 !

These dreadful RISP games are why they are not 10+ games better.

Big series! He had the GIDP against the pitcher who couldn’t throw a strike to end game 1, too.

Whew - 8-15 since the three game sweep of MFY Aug 18-20
Toronto, Texas (both hungry to win to get a playoff spot), Tampa and Baltimore (playing for first place) lie ahead, with a 3 day breather against the White Sox.
MFY have six against Pittsburgh and KC.
Last place is very doable for us.

Looking at the 40 man and active rosters - not much can be done - I fear we may get another look at Kluber, and maybe a peek at Gillaspe, but that's it for the arms. No apparent way to get Dalbec and Valdez up unless Urias goes back down or there is an injury. So - we have what we have - Abreu and Rafaela have to be enough, it seems

As if getting swept by the Hankees isn't bad enough, we're also burning up the rookie status of what should be our top prospect. Rafaela has 2024 ROY written all over him.

Rafaela needs 45 days or 130 ABs to lose rookie eligibility. Not gonna hit those

Wasn't he called up early enough to hit the 45 days ? If not then I'm happy he's here.

I don't see many must haves on the roster for next year. (just looking at the current 26 man active for the assessment below)
Keepers - pitchers Bello, Crawford, Houck, Winck, Whitlock. Bats - Wong, Casas, Devers, Story, Abreu, Rafaela
All others - trade, sell, work deals, whatever.

Makes me think of Freddy Lynn in Sept 1974 !The Sox played the Yankees that September & Phil Rizzuto was impressed by the rookie. "He just carries himself like a ballplayer." Come 1975, listening to Ned Martin on the radio & one of the Gold Dust twins hit a late homer to put the Sox ahead, or win the game, I'd then switch to the Yankees broadcast to listen for the update to come in. Scooter would be so pained, "Ohhh, that huckleberry Jim Rice just hit a 3-run homer and now the Red Sox are leading, 4-3 in the 9th." I loved the schadenfreude even then.

Tonight’s game for me was harder than most this year. Yesterday I could take losing in stride, confident that we were seeing the beginning of something beautiful, the excitement of guys like Rafaela snd Wilyer showing that there was going to be a future worth the wait. A winner built on homegrown talent. Tonight, I have no idea what’s to come. A new regime comes in with a win-now mandate and pairs promising prospects with mid veterans to bring talent? We stay the course but spend more? It’s one thing to fade in September. It’s another to go into an offseason with no idea what’s next.

I don't expect many free agents outside of hopefully Yamamoto or some 2 year contracts. I do though expect the Sox to take on solid players in trades where the player might be overpaid a bit but with a two year maximum commitment. Those should be easy to come by without giving up many prospects. If done before the Rule 5 drat, even better. Teams usually deal from strength positions and that's the Sox strength right now. I expect a fairly large remake. The Sox have money and a boatload of second tear or redundant prospects.
