Kutter's spring: 13.2 IP, 1 ER, 0 BB, 13 K ... if you don't count the two ER from the first inning today. Still 3 ER in 13.2 IP is good for a 1.98 ERA for the spring. Also 50 strikes in 68 pitches. Kid was filling it up.

Rule #1 for pitchers. Never waste a pitch.

I wonder what new pitch Whitlock threw? Can't see behind paywall.

It's not totally clear from the write-up. A gyro slider? Or is the cutter the new one?
"With that “new toy,” Whitlock added to the impression that his arsenal is more rounded than it has been in the past. For most of his big league career, he’s worked with three pitches — a sinker, changeup, and one version of a slider. This spring, while his sinker and slider have remained his primary offerings, he’s shown confidence in a sweeper with horizontal movement and gyro slider with more north-south action. And his cutter — though a work in progress — shows potential to further vary looks."

“In 5⅔ shutout innings on Wednesday, Whitlock faced 20 Twins batters, struck out 10, walked none, and had only one ball travel beyond the infield in the air. He allowed three hits while throwing 57 of 73 pitches for strikes, had just one three-ball count, and induced 14 swings and misses.”

Lol I'm not making fun of Speier, but it's like we are making up pitches right now. Sounds like a bad name for a hot dog. In response to Gyro slider.

I wonder what new pitch Whitlock threw? Can't see behind paywall. Can Whitlock stay relatively healthy this year?

Re: Whitlock’s pitch mix, Lou Merloni had talked with him about it before his most recent TV game. It seems like it’s basically: -Sinker (Whitlock referred to it as a “one seam fastball”) -Change-up (aka the Matt Andriese Special) -Slider 1 (sweeper) -Slider 2 (more vertical drop) -Cutter (new) -4 seam fb occasionally You can see a few of the differences in the video of his 5 strikeouts from last Friday night. There’s what looks to be a cutter for strikeout #1 (but it’s hard to verify), a sweeper vs Christian Vazquez for K #2. Meanwhile #3 and #4 appear to be the “gyro” slider - which as Lou on the broadcast notes is more curve-bally, and the last is on a change up: www.mlb.com/video/garrett-whitlock-strikes-out-five-in-spring-startWe’ve only had one game of Whitlock Statcast pitch data this spring, which I believe was March 10th where he wasn’t particularly great and his stuff didn’t grade out well. The minor league game today Speier reported on seems to paint a much more dynamic picture - that of a starter who has 4 to 5 pitches to play with and can throw them all for strikes.

Still would love to hear why they see it as a good idea to reduce Whitlock’s extension assuming that change sticks

Lineup tonight: Duran CF Devers 3B Story SS Casas 1B O’Neill DH Yoshida LF Rafaela 2BAbreu RF Wong C Now that's interesting on Rafaela...I don't know that he has played second before, but have no doubt that his athleticism would allow quick acclimatization..Of all the players I have been privileged to have watched in the GCL, he and Bleis have been a cut above...reported so by both Steve and me. Rafaela's offense is not a surprise and his seeming advancement in zone management will make him an offensive force not just a lineup place taker. Bleis stood out even more. This guy is so graceful in the outfield. Thoroughbred. Hopefully some day soon he will patrol the field with Rafaela...maybe in right.. .shades of Lynn and Evans.

Ceddanne Betts doing things again. How he avoided the tag and then held onto the bag with his leg would make Houdini impressed.

Tyler O’Neill continues to have a really solid spring too. I know ST stats don’t matter, but it has to be good for his confidence to start this way on a new team as a guy trying to have a bounce back year.

Nice, but risky, catch in LCF by Duran. Tough on the left shin/knee:

Kenley hit 95 mph on his sinker, seemed to be sitting 93 with his cutter per the beat reporters. A reminder that Kenley had a velocity jump last year, throwing harder than he had in any season since 2016.

Smooth-looking forceout by Rafaela to Story to get the lead runner at second base on a groundball. Rafaela is the best defensive second baseman and best defensive outfielder on this team.
