Down 4 to 5 when the defense has been terrible, the lineup is ugly and Joe Jacques has pitched 1.2 IP. Game isn't out of reach but if they can't pull it out this would be a loss we look at shake our heads pretty good at.

Another instance of Casas knowing the zone better than the ump Can’t wait til the challenge system Need ABS - forget challenge system. Just get them all right - end arguing, end running out of challenges. Just no excuse for half measures.

A loss today would bring us to 10-10. Going by the game thread I figured we were in danger of falling to 0-20 with another loss.

Would you prefer he didn't acquire Abreu and Valdez for 2 below replacement level months of Vazquez? It's not like the alternative is some All Star; the alternative is random org guys who would be even worse.
And again, Story is injured. It makes no sense to knock a GM for signing a player that ends up getting injured.
He wasn't a guy with great splits. He never hit in Boston and has gotten worse the rare times he was healthy. He can't hit a breaking ball. The injury just compounds the issues. He had a .737 away from Coors. He had elbow inflammation in 2021. He had a similar injury in 2018. The whole question about his signing was the strength of his throwing arm and why 2B made sense for him. They knew he'd eventually need surgery on it, which he had gotten. But again, it's his bat that you can really blame more than anything. But him not being completely healthy wasn't exactly a blindsided thing. He did hit in Boston, despite plenty of adversity. He was absolutely on fire in May 2022 and hit something like 10 homers. His spring training was a trainwreck due to signing in late March and then getting food poisoning as he was moving his life to Boston, he still had the balky elbow, and he missed a couple months with a broken wrist from a HBP. And his bat still shook out to about average. An average bat with an elite glove at the most important position on the field is an All Star caliber player.
It has been well documented that Colorado players do just fine when they leave Coors. They have big home/road splits while playing in Colorado because the ball moves differently at altitude, but they aren't nearly as lopsided once they are playing elsewhere full time.
Story's elbow injury was known at the time he was signed, which is why he was available at a significant discount; elbow surgery at some point must have been at least considered a possibility, but likely wasn't viewed as inevitable or they likely would have done it right after a season. The HBP and shoulder injury were new, though, and could have happened to anyone. Story was very durable in Colorado; the elbow was really his only major injury, and even that didn't keep him off the field for long. Like he played 157 games in 2018 when you're saying his elbow injury apparently cropped up (first I've heard this too).

A loss today would bring us to 10-10. @ Pirates this weekend it looks like the expected starters will be TBD (Quinn Priester?), Mitch Keller and... old friend Martin Perez! They avoid rookie sensation Jared Jones.. Honestly I'd happily settle for .500 (or at best like a win or two above .500) by the end of April while we wait for everyone to get healthy/return (Devers, O'Neill, Grissom, Pivetta, Whitlock). But that will require not completely collapsing on this upcoming road trip vs Pittsburgh and Cleveland I sincerely agree - but am also being sarcastic - when I say that, yes, this team could be quite good if they just wait for all the injured guys to get healthy and then also no one else gets hurt for the rest of the year! Bend don't break until July and then hope Breslow has balls or that Roman Anthony is an alien - that's how I sleep at night

It seems relatively infeasible, but I’d love to see some sort of zone-adjusted xwOBA stat using the Statcast strike zone. I feel like Casas has struck out looking at pitches outside of the zone half a dozen times already.

they can't do anything against that Herrin. He will pitch the 8th and then they will face Clase and hope.

That is such a terrible call.
This sport is so much worse than it should be because of these clowns.
This should have been solved 20 years ago.

He did play a ton of games despite getting banged up like his thumb injury so I'll give them that. It's just that they knew without any work done to his elbow he couldn't be a SS. Interestingly, in his first season with the Red Sox his OPS was exactly the same as his road split, .737.

If it’s still a 1 run game do we want Ceddanne, Masa or Bobby D leading off the 9th?
