So which outfielder are you sitting for him to have playing time? none of them you are sitting Bobby Dalbec You cannot just plug guys into different positions and expect them to be able to play them. 1st base does take a certain skill level and height and length is a plus. Bobby while not hitting has played a good 1st since Casas was injured and has made a number of plays that would not have been made by anyone else on the team. Christ I would think that watching guys play below average defense at positions they actually have played all through the minors would have opened peoples eyes to what an impact not having defense makes on a team. All this crying about Masa I don't get. If TON or Devers needs to DH then Masa sits. The only people providing offense are the outfielders and the catchers so I get wanting Masa to play. But once again it comes down to roster construction. Maybe by next year it will be squared away. I didn't think they would get it fixed in one year so I am not surprised.

Refsnyder has played 1B at the MLB level before and he was playable there. Dalbec's bat is not playable, so it's an easy decision to sit Dalbec and put Rob at 1B. The fact that they wouldn't even try that while sitting Yoshida and running out lineups with four dudes under a .500 OPS is just astounding.

But as an everyday player Dalbec is on pace for about -2.5 WAR *by the end of May.* Frankly, playing him at all should essentially be off the table; if we're down to emergency measures then playing Yoshida in LF and Refsnyder at 1B at least occasionally is a better one than letting Bobby keep running out there.

Cora said they decided Yoshida is DH-only in the offseason This just feels like a weirdly strict policy. Yeah he’s bad but not like unplayable bad in left. I get it as the plan but being unwilling to divert from it to the point that you’re consistently starting a guy with like a negative 50 wRC+ feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Given how badly he fell off in the second half last year, supposedly due to fatigue, I wonder if it’s less about defense and more about trying to keep his legs under him for 162 games.

Seems like that would be an easy thing to say to both Yoshida and the media, no?
"He seemed to get a little run down last year and we're taking steps to make sure he's healthy and contributing all through the summer, so while we'd like to have his bat in the lineup, we need to think about the bigger picture."
The bummer option, which is much harder to come out and say, is that Breslow's team just thinks Yoshida is not a good player. It's not his signing, and plenty of guys come into the league and find success until they get figured out and can't adjust. Maybe the front office thinks "second half" Yoshida is much closer to the real Yoshida.

Having never seen Rob play first I cannot speak for his defense. But I assume that the Sox have seen him there and can make a better judgement on if his defense is playable or not. If he has not played it in a bit even if he is good the first out of the game is one that is typically not made.

Well, thank God this 1B discourse can end with Cooper on the club now.
Gonna be super interesting to see him and Vaughn in the lineup next series.

And with Valdez's stellar defense and the new age way of scoring errors a clean hit. But that was a run without Dalbec throwing to Wink on the run.

Grissom can't be worst than that right?

Valdez has improved defensively, but still not enough especially when he's not hitting.

TON should sign a team friendly contract so he can hit in Fenway for half the year

Yoshida off the monster! Nice to see him go the other way instead of trying to pull
