If that was the case, then more of the prospects would've succeeded when the moved on from the organization. But even the highly touted folks (Espinoza, Groome, Kopech, Kelly, etc) didn't turn into MLB starters. You are so right, James. Boy, those names bring back memories. Saw them all except Groome and was excited about them all. Remember talking with Kelly's dad, who was in the same business, and they were torn about him being shortstop or a pitcher. Thought he was going to be a good one. You never really can tell when they are so young. Many more did over the years Steve. John Tudor, Don Aase, Bobby Ojeda and I doubt Bruce Hurst would have continued playing the game at all much longer had he not been able to escape to (then) somehat recluse area SD and much closer to his morman roots area Idaho. While never knew Tudor, nor bobby O that well. Hurst was constantly homesick each and every season and was miserable season long. found that out his 1st yr of pro ball and Boston had -0- support system in place. It was up to his fellow players and friends he met along the way to help out. Tudor I remember warming up prior to a ST game once, his very 1st. It was him and the C, who don't recall even was at the time. No coach nearby, no manager. Must have been johnny Mac at the time. Maybe ralph houck. Just don't remember, but a really young kid warming up for probably the biggest game (then) they had ever thrown and not 1 member of the coaching staff was anywhere to be found. must have bee.. 82? 83?

Tudor was dealt for Mike Easler after the 1983 season. Houck managed the Sox from 1981 - 1984, so it had to be Houck. McNamara didnt take over until 1985 when Tudor har been traded again, from Pittsburgh to St. Louis where he had the best pitching season, outside of Doc Gooden, that year. FWIW, Hurst later on expressed a lot of regret about leaving Boston for San Diego.

Shame periods had was there (WH area) and gone for a bit, before returning back to be there a bit a few years before they left the city for good. Things weren't quite the same when came back wth regards to the team and people in places i knew/had known by the time could return for awhile to focusing on them. Sure, Rac Slider and joe Morgan were stll with the organisation, but much higher up the food chain. Lower areas were people in the game not nearly as friendly and helpful, tho was still able to keep somewhat coveted access, but info was begining to dry up unless from those guys and onother profesional type who worked with the team round 2 locally during ST. That, a small biz to run (with some help of course) kind of ended up making it a blessing when the Sox pulled up stake and left in a way. my (then) kind of young son did enjoy the times, but everythings comes to an end, other than to the memories of chain-o-lakes park. not been to that area in yrs. we are in lakeland now, have been since '98. Thought the huge orange dome, which used to could see in backgrounds on some ancient baseball cards from 60's and 70's? Any seen those? Wife tells me it's finally coming down. groves, which used to be beyond the RF wall there are long since apartments, now the entire, like 15 acres is under the plough.. Apartments all the way to she shore of lake lulu, which the stadium's backside was upon. Death once and for of baseball in winter haven.

Kristian Campbell with a HR. A reminder that Asheville is one of the most hitter friendly parks. In the NC mountains. 2000 ft above sea level. I live in Asheville, can confirm, and it's a relatively pedestrian park, as noted by some of the people who have run through here. Hopefully the new upgrades bring it into the next century. Will say this though, while is doesn't look or feel like an MLB or even some of the new Minor League parks, the concessions there are light years above what is offered down the road @ Greenville. The food is actually edible. Greenville has ambience but you have to eat before you go to the game.

I'd argue if you're relying too much on ballpark food in either locale you're probably doing it wrong. Two awesome places.

Yeah, I have not found eating before going to the game to be a chore in Greenville.
