Secure Password: the Jhostynxon Garcia thread
|
Post by rickasadoorian on Jun 12, 2024 9:16:40 GMT -5
I didn't see a catch all thread for the lesser prospects. If there is one, please point me to it.
When do we start seriously discussing Jhostynxon Garcia? And how does one pronounce Jhostynxon?
For the year, the 21 year old is now slashing .264/.371/.558 in 151 PA. 17 xbh/10 HRs. 23.8% K%, 12.6% BB%. .289 BAbip He earned a promotion to Greenville on the back of a .258/.365/.517 performance in Salem in 104 PA. That includes 5 HRs. 24.0%, 14.4% BB% .305 BAbip SSS alert, but he's been even better in Greenville. .275/.383/.650 in 47 PA, with 5 HRs. K% of 23.4%, BB% of 8.5%. .250 BAbip
I mentioned this in a game thread, and it could just be coincidence, but he's been hitting at another level since his brother joined him in A ball. Sometimes little things can light a fire under a player. Who knows.
Last year prior to Johanfran's promotion: 227 PA/196 AB, .218/.313/.340, 25bb/62k, 27.3% 11.1% BB% .299 BAbip Last year after Johanfran's promotion: 83 PA/68 AB, .265/.374/.471, 12bb/17k. 20.4% K%, 14.4% BB% .327 BAbip
So over his last 234 PA/197 AB, he's slashing .264/.372/.528, 25 xbh/11 HR, 31bb/53k, 18sb/3cs. 22.6% K%, 13.2% BB%. .308 BAbip
On another note, I don't have time to do a deep dive right now but Jojo Ingrassia is putting up some ridiculous numbers too. 14.8k/9, 40.3% K%.

Prospects get better as they get used to the level, using Johanfran's promotion as the data point leads to confirmation bias IMHO.

This is interesting I noticed these kids sprinkling up now. It’s pretty cool too. I swear I would get annoyed at the lists comparing our guys to other systems . I really try not to affect me. My thing is this when we graduate a kid we get the bang for the buck.
These other teams you almost never hear from them . I will give you a perfect example the San Diego prospects. This team is always prospect loaded. But do they get any bang for the buck not really.
Our kids were always position loaded but finally looks like pitchers are popping too. I’m personally happy how things are going in our systems.

Let's try to avoid catch-all threads. If you want to talk about a specific player, please go ahead and create one. I've updated this thread so it's about Jhostnyxon, but feel free to create one about any other player. Thanks!

It is beginning to look like there is a real chance that both he and Johanfran could make the majors. That would be pretty special. It's been a while since the Sox have had brothers playing for them. Hoping for a full recovery for Johanfran and that he picks up right where he left off.

I always say "Ghost Nixon" in my head when I see him pop up on Twitter. It makes me laugh, so hopefully he keeps producing highlights!

I completely forgot about Ramon and was thinking Tony and Billy C.

Was their a 3rd Martinez brother in Pawtucket? Very good memory. Jesus pitched one year in the Sox system in 99 for Sarasota.

A few scattered thoughts:
- First off, "the Password" is a tremendous nickname for Jhostynxon. In fact, nobody try to log into my checking account right now. I'm not sure who came up with that originally, but shoutout to Chris Clegg for at least making me aware of that.
- I love his swing. Its violent but seems to have enough control to work.... apparently his contact rates are pretty good? At least for a player with his ISO?
- He strikes me as a guy with some similarities to Wilyer Abreu, although I'm not trying to make a 1-to-1 player comp so hear me out: I think often times when you have a player with his body type and who puts up big power numbers, there is an assumption or concern that that level of power comes with a value tradeoff in other areas of the game, predominantly baserunning and defense. As far as I can tell so far, he seems to move pretty well for his size, plays at least a decent OF with a strong arm, and is functional if not slightly valuable on the basepaths (14SB to 2CS on the year). So to the extent that he can maintain his athleticism and sneaky attributes, he seems like a profile that can become underrated (in this sense, like a Wilyer Abreu) due to scout's concerns/biases with his body type and slugger stereotyping.

Continues to hit. He's on a 5 game hitting streak, with 4 of those games being of the multi hit variety.
You'd like him to walk a little more, but his K% is currently better than it was in A. He's at .313/.378/.627 in 74 PA at A+. 4bb/18k. Cut his K% from 28.1% to 24.3%
Still in really SSS territory though. It'll be interesting to see where he is in August.

I've seen "The Password" nickname go viral on non-baseball Twitter a couple times this week

I think it will be important to watch his splits. If he only hit against RHPs, his numbers suggest we would be modestly interested in his power and other attributes, but not his pure hit tool.
He is crushing LHPs like Blaze Jordan. There are roles for this in MLB, but the key will be whether he can learn to also hit RHPs. SSS so far, but the vast majority of it is against RHPs, and it isn't promising.
I do hope it's more flukey in the splits, and he has just happened to rake lefties. It's not impossible for that to be true or for him to start to hit RHPs better. If I remember correctly (but not positive I do), his vs RHP numbers are improving. And it is encouraging that his power is showing up against RHPs.

Not sure I'm following the bolded part....he currently has a .270/.361/.561 slash line (OPS: .922) against RHPs on the year. 11 of his 13 HRs have come off of RHPs too. As you mentioned, he's hardly faced LHPs this year (less than 13% of plate appearances) and it's been a pretty stellar year for him thus far.

By the way, in case anyone is wondering about the thread title I didn't think this is what Chaim meant when he said it would be awesome, but here we are and it is indeed awesome.

According to out friends at SP here: In Greenville: Against RHP: .324/.403/.691/1.094 (68 ABs) Against LHP: .222/.222/.222/.444 (9 ABs) So that's way better obviously and suggest the Salem SSS numbers were flukey. This is much more exciting.

I'm clueless, what does the password have to do with anything ? Because his first name is long and unique. Add a number and a special character and it would meet the requirements for a very strong online banking password

I'm clueless, what does the password have to do with anything ? I assume it's a reference to the random letter generation he uses as a first name. It's kinda nice though as long as no one can figure him out... might be ever so slightly more apt for a tricky pitcher, but I guess I don't get to decide these things for other people. Seriously though is it pronounced Yost-nixon? Or Yost-een-hon?Sorry, forgot we have a whole website dedicated to that kind of info: Pronunciation: yos-TIN-son
