Does anyone think they would have taken him over Moran or Frazier? Of course it was a "last minute" decision. If you're being literal, they all are. But they weren't scrambling, they had a board, they played out this scenario. The probably had Appel or Bryant above these guys, too bad they didn't fall. Context. I'm not talking about the pick, I'm talking about the guy scoffing at Ball's quote.

So Yankees turn their 3 first rounders into Jagielo, Judge and Clarkin .. expected better

No reason not to take a chance on a guy like this with three picks in that range.

About 5 picks before it looked like the Yankees could have really cashed in with Kaminsky, Stanek and Jagielo

As of right now, I'm hoping (in order) that we can grab 1. Cord Sandberg 2. Cody Reed or 3. Michael Lorenzen at 45.

Clarkin's favorite moment: they D'Backs beating the Yankees. "I could not stand the Yankees, so I was in tears [presumably of joy]"
Clarkin and his dad hate the Yankees. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
EDIT: Clarkin just learned the hard way to never be negative in an interview.

After reading the posts prior here is my thoughts on Ball. I had Shipley as the guy I wanted because he had a developed change up which many pitchers struggle to develop as anything outside of an average pick. Ball has already shown an above average change up and is much younger. Again he is a tall athletic player who can generate good plain on his pitches with the height. He has projection and can add more mph to his stuff and I think he can sit 95-96 within three years. He has shown development in his third pitch (the curve) after not throwing it until last season. The Red Sox will be able to mold him as a young low use arm. Like the upside. Tremendous. Best LHP outside of the injured Manaea.
In reference to the two way player notes. It is not unusual for many of the better HS pitchers to play two ways. Its not as much of a concern for me as it would be for a college two way player. He is young and will have 4 plus years to focus on his pitching craft in the minor league system without being a two way player.
I do believe he may sign below slot but not for much less than 3M.
For those who mention the system has plenty of pitching and wanted a bat I would argue two points. First Ball likely isn't ready for 5 years. By then Lester may be gone. Buchholz likely is resigned long term but there are no guarentees on Webster, De La Rosa, Barnes, Owens, Workman, Britton and so forth. You cant draft need when you cant project your need 5 years out. Secondly I would offer Bogaerts (SS,3B, or RF) Cecchini (3B or 2B), Vazquez (C), Brentz (LF/RF), Bradley JR (CF), Swihart (C/OF), Marrero (SS), Almanzar (3B/1B) and Margot (OF) as some names that balance the pitching prospects in the system. Additionally I think its easier to find an impact hitter in free agency over an impact pitcher with the new system of locking up the young talent.
