That will help the system depth at catcher if his signs.

I'm kind of a downer sometimes, so feel free to call me out on it, lol...But, is anyone else concerned with the Sox track record developing HS prospects, pitchers especially? Who are the top guys they have missed on lately? Casey Kelly? They got Adrian Gonzales with him so they got value. Henry Owens? He is progressing into one of the better prospects in the system. That too. Also we've had good size turnover in our scouting and development department so we can't really look at past successes/failures that way. If we want to get a true ace then we have to either take a risk of some kind to get that player or tank an entire season and get the top pick in the draft. I like the pick. Its not Frazier but of what was left on the board its the best I think we could hope for. He was first half of the draft draftable as an outfielder so he has a back up plan if things do fail as a pitcher and his dad limited his use of the curveball so there's plenty of room for improvement there. He's not a college arm that's been heavily taxed by an idiotic coach and he has plenty of height and room for at least a tick or two more pop on the fastball. Go back to last years draft and take out Marrero and insert Ball and let me know what you think.

It's too bad the kid won't get to go up to the podium and throw on a Red Sox jersey for the cameras. Hopefully he signs and they give him a nice big welcome.

I love the fact that the Red Sox grabbed a catcher with future grades of 60 hit and 60 power.

Jon Denny.... The greatest catcher of all time... according to himself... I like the confidence. I hope he was with a chip on his shoulder. He really deserved to go much higher.

Love the pick.. doubt they can go over slot for more than 1 more guy now.. but love the strategy.

That is a great great pick. He'll be allowed to develop slowly and put some thump into Greenville next year. I like the profile of bat good enough to play outfield or corner, but could also stick at C

Tyler O'Neill was a catcher, but teh M's just took him as a right fielder.

Wow, awesome. This will allow some people who didn't like the Ball pick to shut up now. Great release, I thought he might be passed on. Awesome! If Ball signs for less than slot...I suppose...

Red Sox sticking with the up the middle draft approach, C, P, SS, CF.
Love the pick, hope he signs and he defense improves. Could be a steal.
Red Sox don't seem like they saved too much slot money through these first 3 rounds, which doesn't have to be a bad thing. Anyone else think they could of picked Denney in 2nd round and Stank after?

Blue Jays look like they are starting their tanking earlier than last year.. Just picked a kid not ranked in the BA 500 in the 3rd round.

That will help the system depth at catcher if his signs. I can't imagine them drafting him without being confident they're at least in the ballpark on a figure already.

The organization seems to be putting an emphasis on players up the middle of the field. I like it.

If the Sox are hoping to sign Denney (and hope they are) they might try to draft 6 guys going to the military service who will sign for 1G again, like Watkins did last year. I'd be fine with it. 3 very high upside people, all 19YO or younger is about all one can ask with the new CBA limitations.

I saw some tweets before this round started that the Royals had a deal worked out with Denney for an above slot deal.. pocket = picked.

How many rounds are protected picks (as in if draftee doesn't sign, pick is given in the same place next year)?

Couldn't be happier. I was pleasantly surprised the MFYs didn't take Denney late in the first round because he's been one of my personal favorites for a while now. Can't believe we got him at 81.

I am not sure Stankiewicz would have fallen to round three. Someone probably would have taken him earlier and signed him to a below slot deal. I assume Denney fell in part because of the bonus demands. The better player with higher bonus demands seem to fall in the new system, compared to the guys who are solid players, but willing to cut deals.

If they sign Trey Ball for say 3 million and save 200-400k on Stankiewicz they can Sign Denney for over 1 million and be right on track for their allotments
