watching the Red Sox for the last two years has me thinking that WAR really undervalues defense Or that the Sox undervalue talent.

Batting practice fastball right down the middle. Good job Reyes.

Is that still true? Duran has looked pretty solid out there this year one dropped ball in LF the exception (I would also prefer Andrus/DeJong/Any real SS) Duran was arguably the worst full time centerfielder in MLB last year. I don't know if he's improved again but that is possible Isn't it commonly accepted that SS is the more important defensive position?

Man, Masa got so unlucky on that one. Seriously! I mean how many soft ground outs to 2B can anyone hit in one season. Just by luck wouldn't you expect a soft ground out to the shortstop?

Thought for sure they'd move Rafaela to short when it was obvious Story was gonna be out for a while. Nothing like proactive management to wait for someone to fail before doing something about it.

If they continue with a Gonzalez/Hamilton platoon at short past April, they're basically giving up on the season.

Verlander gets to the heart of the issue. He hates the injuries but everyone is acting correctly given the incentives. He throws out the double hook idea, which is interesting but IMO a longshot to make a difference. Don't think there's a way out of this. Yeah, tying the DH to how long the starting pitcher goes is interesting as according to this starters are 2.5 times more likely to get injured than relief pitchers. Not sure how workable it would be, but interesting nevertheless. He also mentions the change in the ball that made "swing and miss" way more important than "pitching to contact." I would add the outlawing of anything to give pitchers a little more grip on the ball and thus they have to use more force to get the same velocity/spin. Cora added that he thought the year-round pitching programs have contributed as well. So you probably have a bunch of different factors all playing a role, but maybe reducing just some of those factors would help reduce the number of injuries. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35040985/#:~:text=Conclusions%3A%20Starting%20pitchers%20displayed%20a,arm%20injury%20than%20relief%20pitchers.

Story's career is not over for the simple reason that he still has 4 years and $100MM left on his contract. Think the reference is to his career as a starting SS in the majors. Obviously if he were to be DFAd someone would definitely pick him up as a backup.

I'm going to need to see more than one example before I'm convinced. Neither of them are at the point where they are torquing their elbows in those images. Besides, while Reyes may have had a higher average fastball velo (reliever), Verlander could touch 102 with max effort. And Verlander also needed surgery! Isn't he describing the inverted W that has been pointed out as leading to more injuries? I think Strasburg was a prime example of that. Oh, and Angel Hernandez is the PRIME justification for robot ball/strike calls.

I think the craziest thing is and I’m sure many will disagree I think Bello has the worst stuff of our 5 SPs As a long hater of Pivetta as an enigma, maybe he truly did find something last year. Hope everyone keeps it up I think you can make that case, but still I'm taking Bello's pure stuff over at least Whitlock, and probably Houck and Kutter too but it's closer. Didn't realize it was Whitlock specifically because I had a sense since game 1 that in general opposing hitters have been fouling off more pitches than the Sox hitters.

I feel like Winck is throwing a lot of pitches for only being in week two. (I mean cumulatively, not just tonight). At this rate, he's not gonna make it out of April.

Story is one of the worst signings in team history. Not really his fault and he seems like a good guy but he's probably missing a lot of time from the looks of it. Not even close, even if you want to blame the team for not magically anticipating his future injuries. Yeah, Panda bear says hold my beer.
