Regarding Harper, I feel the outfield is in good shape going forward. If they are going to throw large dollars at anyone next offseason I would think the Sox would be better served trying to sign Machado. Sign a stop gap 1st baseman this offseason, move Devers over to 1st with Machado at 3rd. Highly unlikely but a fan can dream. Rumor is Machado wants to play SS.

It will be a little embarrassing if Judge wins the MVP over Altuve if you've watched the playoffs to this point. Not that it is a post season related award my any means but the recency bias would make it look the a poor choice.

Well even when it's good it's bad. Pablo Sandoval's horrific season ends on a highlight for him . . a walkoff homer! The catch here. His heroics only managed to cost his team the #1 draft pick next summer.

Heyman is speculating that the trade will become official once the Yankees game ends. It seems like a done deal. Yup. Rutherford + Clarkin. No clue which relievers are actually involved. Clippard would head to Chicago to offset salary as well.

Can't complain, even though Bell seemed like a great fit. Bell was called best defender in draft by some sites. Ojeleye is good value, can score and is a great athlete. If they like him, I like it. Bulls draft Bell and trade him to Golden State.

Always felt like Boston was fighting over the same guys with Theo in Chicago. Feels very much the same with Arizona now!

If not selected before I would expect Boston to go with Logan Warmoth.

I see Baltimore has placed Aneury Tavarez on outright waivers. If not claimed by another team he will head back to the Pawtucket.

I guess my disappointment with this trade comes from the fact that I buy the late season adjustments and the resulting improved performance. He produced a 3.22 second half ERA with a reduced walk rate between his 8 starts and bull pen work. Perhaps it's a fool me twice (thrice/four times, etc. . ) scenario but I had the expectation of a decent year from Buchholz (and therefore a higher trade value). I'm not going to change my opinion on that just because he's no longer a Red Sox. I hope he throws well and I think Philadelphia made a smart move with their payroll flexibility. I mean 13.5 million is not really that much for a starter these days. As a free agent I could have seen Clay getting 2 and 20. l also wouldn't be surprised if he gets a little Rich Hill-like love next offseason.

So where does this leave the team.
There is clearly at least one excess starter. Question is what do you do here? Hold onto them all in case of injury or for trade fodder at the deadline to get a missing piece. Trade one now and try to fill the 1B/DH slot?
This also puts a greater emphasis on the need to start locking up the young players with a very depleted farm system that can't be relied on to replace them. I expect this has to go into earnest starting this spring. Get at least one done.
The pen is fairly complete when you consider Smith as a possible return mid season. Perhaps they can have excess here and capitalize in the future on the escalated values of late inning arms.
This team doesn't have to have a complete replacement for Ortiz's bat. This is a tremendous offense and is well distributed. Quality pitching and defense can make this team great. While more pop would be appreciated I'm not certain finding upgrades defensively on the infield wouldn't be just as valuable or more so with this roster.
