Alright fellas. Our pitching appears to be the deepest it's been in years. That being said, what would you do to change our 2013 lineup and make it better in 2014? Do you consider resigning guys like Ellsbury, Napoli, or Salty? Who do you start in the outfield? Keep in mind we currently have the best offense in baseball.

I want to see Nava/Gomes/Carp at 1B + LF, with Bradley/Hawaiian/Brentz at CF + RF plus WMB, Xan, PD, Papi and Salty. Platoon Salty with Ross or Lavarnway. Holt is your utility. AAA depth includes JHaze, Hassan, C Vaz, Shaw, Cecch, acquisitions for RF/CF and middle IF. The latter is where this trade hurts.

I'd like us to pick up another big bat in the OF. Nelson Cruz is a FA that comes to mind.

Napoli's horrific contact and K rates don't inspire much confidence. I'd let him go, even if we don't follow up with a significant acquisition. Ellsbury is a goner, and that's just fine to me. We'll lose his speed and some batting average, but JBJ offers a good package of terrific defense and an advanced plate approach at a minimum price. I'd expect something like: Buchholz Lackey Peavy Lester Doubront Dempster (having 6 quality guys here is an asset, and considering injury history, I wouldn't look to deal any of them this offseason, unless someone really wants Dempster. CF Bradley RF Victorino 2B Pedroia DH Ortiz SS Bogaerts LF Nava/Gomes 1B Carp/FA signing C Salty/McCann 3B Middlebrooks? (there are no good FA options here) C Ross IF Holt OF Gomes Corey Hart (R), Kendrys Morales (S) (he can't really play 1B everyday though), and Justin Morneau (L) all come to mind as possible 1B pickups whose cost won't be unreasonable. I'll throw in Michael Morse as well, just because I love his power, especially going the other way. Brian McCann would be an intriguing option at catcher, and it'll be interesting to see how the Sox handle the QO with Salty. I'd like us to pick up another big bat in the OF. Nelson Cruz is a FA that comes to mind. Eh, I'd pass on Cruz. He's a late bloomer and already 33 years old, with a Biogenisis suspension imminent. Also, his hammy's are quite delicate to say the least. If healthy, you can stash him in left and imagine him hitting 40 bombs at Fenway, but I don't think he'll be worth the risk. Against lefties, his offense is marginally better than Gomes (which is pretty good). Against righties, he's far more powerful than Nava but has a .318 career OBP. EDIT: P.S. Dare I say I want the Sox to strongly consider re-signing Drew?

Just spitballing here, but Hosmer was available this past offseason. Wonder if for the right price we could get him from KC. I'd like to get a stud 1b this offseason regardless instead of a platoon.

Why can't we do with Nava what we did with Iggy ? Put a package around him to get what we need . Sell high on him. He would be perfect for the Royals ,Astros or Brewers. A team like that. I don't see him doing more at the major league level.
Next year we need to see what Brentz can do.

Iggy is a flashy 23 year old with defensive skill that makes him stand out among all of baseball. I don't see Nava - a 30 year old corner outfielder who doesn't do anything exciting - giving us any significant return other than a decent reliever, and it's not worth giving him up for that. Can't express enough how much I'd rather take a .275/.375/.430 line from 100 games of Nava in left over a .250/.280/.450 and Napoli-esque K performance from Brentz.

More I think about it, more I think Drew should be back in a part time role.

I've said this in another thread, but I would be surprised if there was much of a trade market for Daniel Nava. For next year they need to sign or trade for someone to man LF. It would help if the player could also be passable in RF, because Victorino's injuries aren't getting any better. Shin Soo Choo is someone the Red Sox have coveted in the past and I assume will be in on again now that he's a free agent. Going with Nava, Carp, Gomes, and Brentz to somehow man LF and 1B, the two positions that are supposed to give you the most offense, is simply unacceptable in my book. None of those guys are everyday players in the major leagues. One possibility is trying to get Aramis Ramirez from Milwaukee in August, have him play 3B for the rest of the year and 1B next year. The problem is that it's a $20M boat for 14 and there are serious questions about his ability to stay on the field. You might very well end up flushing a lot of money down the toilet. I don't like the idea of getting Morneau and hoping that he returns to the player he was. It simply isn't going to happen with him.

More I think about it, more I think Drew should be back in a part time role. Drew is probably the second best SS on the free agent market and an upgrade on all but about 15 SS in MLB. You want to give him 3-4 years of starter money to be a backup? Unless he signs a QO which I highly doubt, he's gone.

With Peralta's looming suspension, Drew might even be the best SS on the free agent market. With Iglesias gone, it's pretty much a lock that he gets the QO assuming he stays healthy and productive.

More I think about it, more I think Drew should be back in a part time role. Drew can only play SS and is only willing to play SS so a guy like Holt is more valuable in a bench role because of his positional versitility. Holt will do more or less the same as Drew at the plate with less power and a higher BA with the same OBP. They are basically giving the SS job to Xander next year. I would be beyond pissed though if they did what they did this year with Iggy and signed some vet who they are convinced is going to win games while making the rookie sit and be optioned to AAA all season.

I do think the Sox have to be careful about this. Drew does have an injury history which popped up this year, so I am not so sure he will get an offer better than the QO. The Sox can probably go up to $175 next year, but they are already at $118 for next year after the Peavy trade. Yes they might be able to trade Dempster, but they still need at least a corner OF, a C, a 1B, and bullpen help. That's a lot of holes to fill for $60M or so. Even if you assume the Sox would eat $5-7M can they really afford to dig into their ever shrinking budget?

It looks like Workman and Britton are MLB pitchers. When is Bailey projected to pitch again? The Sox bp looks like they'll be ok next year, maybe adding a closer.

Uehara's risk was always that he's an older pitcher who doesn't throw very hard and will probably have a spectacularly bad ending to his career. His price went up this year though.
The will go to arbitration with Miller, and Morales which will cost them in the neighborhood of $4M. Bailey may pitch again but it won't be for the Sox who will likely non-tender him. So that's three spots open. They could in theory fill those with the younger players as you suggest but they may not want to do that. Could add Contreras to the pen this year and have him in there next year if he does well.

Yeah but Semperfisox if we were in Chicago don't you think we would be getting impatient? He is year 2 in his job and this offseason another top 5 pick. That gets old. This isn't Tampa he does have some money there.

I don't disagree, and I also hear what JMed is saying. I guess I was more suggesting that he should be offered the QO, and then if he walks, even better, but I feel it's worth the risk given the minimal depth at AA/AAA. If Drew were to stay, Xander would have to play 3B when Drew was in the lineup (sparingly hopefully), and one of the two would have to learn 2B. You might as well pay the backup if your entire left side of the infield is a) untested, b) making the minimum, and c) you're shallow at the position.

It's pretty clear when the entire MLB is using 13 man pitching staffs that it's time to expand the roster size to 26.

More I think about it, more I think Drew should be back in a part time role. Drew should probably be back in a full-time roll. Have you people actually looked at the SS/3B free agents in 2014? Avoid it if you're prone to nausea. If it were me, given my complete lack of faith in WMB, I'd consider dispensing with the inevitable no-hit utility infielder and go with Drew/Xander at SS/3B, pick up Juan Uribe, and stick him in the lineup at third against lefties with Xander sliding over to shortstop. Or if not that exactly, some kind of arrangement that takes advantage of the fact that you don't need a shortstop on the bench if your everyday third baseman can handle the position. I know, this is MLB and creative solutions in this mold were banned at some point in the early 90s. A man can dream.

Plus, an above average SS is always an easily tradeable piece if/when Cecchini forces his way into the lineup assuming he doesn't move to a corner outfield spot.

You're overrating the SS/3B free agent class if you think we can bring back Drew and sign Uribe as a platoon player...
Kidding aside, it is really pathetic how bad the class is. Add Peralta to those two... and thats pretty much it! I think the Dodgers will go after one of the three. The Cards will be on the shortstops. Detroit is likely now out, but I could see a team like the Pirates making a play for Drew or Peralta. Maybe the Mets? I pointed it out in the "Who to offer a qualifying offer?" thread, but the market is primed for a big overpay. There will be a big demand and very limited supply.
