Looks fairly lucky to face these opposing starters.
Now Timmy will throw a CG 3 hitter. Sorry, ahead of time.

After these roster moves I wish we'd DL Napoli and give him a break. We're going to have Ortiz playing some 1B anyway lets see if 15 days gets Napoli back on track. Speaking of the DL how about Dempster, he clearly could use a break and we have two off days coming up.

Has Ellsbury gotten any off days lately? It's tough to have a bench with a bunch of butchers with the glove.

Team also has next Monday off, just as they had this past Monday off, and after 9/2 they don't play on a Monday the rest of the season.

So is Xander gonna start tonight? This is the first Red Sox game I'll actually be able to watch in a while (and for a while too).

Early report was that Xander was coming up to replace Brock Holt, and Ross is being activated to take the spot of Lavarnaway. But I just saw that Rubby is also being optioned down today. Making room for Jose Contreras?
Worth noting that the only official moves so far seem to be Lavarnaway and Rubby going back down.

Obviously, with the team on the West Coast, they already know who the RP is that's coming up. My guess is it's Contreras and they're evaluating 40-man options. EDIT: Although Speier said this morning that RDLR is going down for another RP on the 40-man. Still, if that were the case, I don't get why we wouldn't have heard who it is.

Considering the schedule ahead, this is really one of those "gotta have it" series against an inferior team.

Could be Villarreal? They could use a power RHP in the pen.

Considering the schedule ahead, this is really one of those "gotta have it" series against an inferior team. Especially considering we wont have the "Xander will give them a shot in the arm excuse" anymore. The Sox were fortunate enough to get just about the best pitching matchups they could ask for on this west coast swing, I'd really like to see them go 4-2, I'd like better, but what the Dodgers are doing right now is pretty incredible.

If Farrell believes in match-ups, and I believe he's mentioned this in the past as one of his justifications to start one player over another, then Xander should start tonight as Drew has faced Lincecum more than 40 times and has dismal numbers against him.

Don't they always do their rookie hazing in the dog days just as they leave for a road trip? I really liked when Joba, Ian and Hughes had to dress as wizard of oz characters. Chamberlain was the cowardly Lion. Igawa was a flying monkey.

I think X sits tonight, don't you guys? Lincecum is a brutal matchup for RHB and they might want to give him a day/night to just settle in and get used to being in the bigs.

I know what you're saying here, but Lincecum is a very different pitcher now than he was for the first few years of his career. I'm not sure any "career vs. Lincecum" stat really means anything.

No X in the lineup tonight. But potentially for two games vs. each SF and LAD series

Not starting Bogaerts tonight might be Farrell's worst managerial decision yet.
