The 25th will be the one-year anniversary of the day Nick Punto got traded to the Dodgers, right?

The 25th will be the one-year anniversary of the day Nick Punto got traded to the Dodgers, right? Yep. Here's a nice little article from Evan Drellich about the trade, with some great quotes from Ben Cherington on how deals get made and negotiating with other GMs and agents. Here's my favorite snippet:

The O's win it on Kelly Johnson getting thrown out at 2nd. Aw this board if the Red Sox end a game like that.
I'll take it from the Rays though.

To be fair, there were 2 outs and the Rays were down by 2. It was a good idea, and works against the Red Sox all the time to steal on them.
Weiters had a great throw.
Hopefully Tampa doesn't keep winning these one run games. They showed a graphic during the O's game, the O's are 0-6 in august 1 run games and the Sox are 1-5. The rays of course had a good record but I don't recall what it was exactly.

To be fair, there were 2 outs and the Rays were down by 2. I get your point, but you could also make a point about Farrell trying to steal one out in last night's game to try and win it in the 10th with Koji in the mound. And actually, being down by one makes the steal even more senseless. It's remarkable actually how many awful decisions are made by managers like every night.

You hit the nail on the head of why that's a much worse idea against the Orioles than it is against the Red Sox. Matt Wieters throws people out.

Sox can't control how other teams play, should just focus on their own play. They are in a control your own destiny situation as of now. They really don't want to get into another 2011 situation.

I really want to see Xander vs. both of the lefties. I know Drew did fine against Zito but Zito does not equal Ryu. And when compared to Zito, Capuano looks like a #2 starter.

Two lefties in the series... I'm sure Xander will play against Nolasco. Ryu has a reverse split, which is really common for rookie LHP, even guys with normal splits in the minors. Unfortunately, we don't know what his splits were in Korea. (This reverse split phenomenon may be caused by RHB struggling against good changeups that they're unfamiliar with, and Ryu does have a good one.) So you may see an odd mix-and-match lineup. Nolasco has a slightly bigger than average split, so we should see a lefty-heavy lineup. Capuano has a huge split, so that's where we should see Ellsbury followed by 7 RHB, including X. The tricky thing here is that Ross has hit Capuano great (4-15, 2 2B, 2 HR, BB), so he has to catch on Sunday. So does that mean Salty starts the first two games, including a day game after a night game? I think so, since they've done that before. Especially since Lester has fared much better with him behind the plate than with Ross. And of course he's going great (9 game hit streak at .361 / .425 / .528).

Caught a huge break with the rotation, so the Sox really should take 2 of 3. Would love to have seen Kershaw, but obviously that would hamper the Sox in the series. Greinke has also been awesome as well.
Xander certainly starts 1 game, he really should start 2

It's remarkable. When looking at the trip a few weeks ago it looked like it could turn into an utter disaster. Fly across country after Sunday Night Baseball vs. the Yankees to face two teams who have pitchers that can very easily shut down the Sox. Turns into 2/3 from SF and just about the best case scenario going into LA. If you can take 4/6 on a west coast swing when your club is struggling, that has to be looked at as a major victory. 9 game west coast trip for TB before they host the Sox on 9/10-9/12. Would be nice to see LAA, OAK, SEA take 5 or 6 from them and hopefully give the Sox some wiggle room heading into the Trop

Have to win the games though. Looking farther ahead we miss Sale when Chisox come to town next weekend. That series needs to be a sweep. Yanks get him right after our series. And, looking ahead to Detroit. We get Scherzer. But, miss Verlander and Anibel Sanchez. I think our lineup should be able to hit Porcello and Fister with all of our lefties.
