Have never thought about trading for this guy before, but I would not be surprised if the Red Sox are looking for a left-handed hitting left fielder by the trading deadline and he could be available. I wonder who we would have to give up?

I wonder who we would have to give up? Probably no one if they paid his contract. No thanks. I don't know. He's on a 7/$80M deal through next year, so it's probably about $20-22M left. He hit 40 HR last year. He's playing at replacement level this year (and was worth just 2.4 WAR last year in spite of the bombs), so it's dicey. But he usually plays RF, so his defense might improve, especially with a cannon arm. And he might be helped by the wall, and the fact that 19 of his road games would be in Camden and Yankee Stadium. If they could get him without giving up much, it's not a bad idea. Same goes for Jay Bruce. A Young platoon with either would be very strong offensively, if fringy defensively. Either way it's not a long commitment, and either could theoretically be traded next year if Benintendi looks ready.

On the other hand, he has a career 100 wRC+ away from Coors Field and almost a 50% ground ball rate this year. Also a .098 ISO away from Coors this season. He has 1.9 fWAR since the beginning of 2014. He's not even worth close to his contract now. He'd have to heat up a lot before I'd be interested in adding him, let alone giving up anything significant.

I figure he's buy-low, meaning he might not cost anyone significant if Colorado is looking to shed salary. We basically have the same concerns, I think I'd just be more willing to absorb the cost if he stunk. I think there's significant risk, but in a platoon in the AL East I think he'd be a useful piece. But again, that's if the only real cost is salary.

I'm not sure if ownership is quite so blase about taking on additional salary. They're already into the luxury tax for the second consecutive year, and this year's payroll will be the largest in team history. Even if Gonzalez doesn't cost much prospect-wise, adding another $17m this year and $20m next year (plus luxury tax payments) is a pretty substantial burden that will come with real payroll-related opportunity costs.

He'd be a lot cheaper than paying Mike Trout 70 million a year.

Also a lot worse. Literally more than four times worse, as a matter of fact.

Get his team to pick up a few million and he'd be 4 times cheaper.

If he comes dirt cheap why not but he's basically a platoon player who benefits from 81 games in Coors.

I know hindsight is 20/20, I think Colorado missed the boat last year when he was tearing the cover off the ball before the deadline. Way too expensive now for a platoon guy.

He and Reddick would be my two LF targets, depending on the total cost of course. Both have hit RH pitching very well over the last two years. Pairing one of those two with Young would give us a 120 wRC+ from LF, and allow us to move Holt back to the utility role. But I wouldn't want to give up much to get either guys, so if it was a high cost I would pass for now.

There's a huge difference between Reddick & Cargo. Yes, they both hit RHP very well, the difference is that Cargo is owed $20 mil next year & would block AB.
