The strength of the system is starting pitching. What with Allen Webster, Anthony Ranaudo, Matt Barnes and Henry Owens the organization is well-armed going forward. Ryan Dempster is not going to fetch a pitching prospect any better than these four. There are other needs.
As for Dempster, sure, if the right offer comes along he could be moved. He's not untouchable by any stretch.

He might be an untouchable.....for other teams. I can't see another team taking on Dempster, I think the Red Sox have him for another year, like it or not.....hey a natural long man next year and spot starter-things could be worse, Dempster's contract won't stop the sox from doing what they need to improve the team for next year.

There's no way a team trades for Dempster, takes on his entire contract, and gives up a notable prospect. Even if the Red Sox picked up, say, $5m of the $13.25m due to him next year, I don't think they'd get a prospect in return that would crack the SP.com top 20.

Yeah. Demp is a salary Dump They move him and it's to clear as much of his salary as they can, not to get anything in return.
Object with getting rid of him is to spot an NL team where he can help (IMO he still can help in the NL) and move him and probably 8-10m of his salary, with Boston paying just 3-5m and taking nothing back prospect in return, freeing them up to spend that money on something that can actually help the team.

Someone made a good point in the 2014 rotation thread that Peavy could be the one to go bc his trade value would be higher and it would be easier to push Dempster out of the rotation if/when any of our AAA starters show their ready to make that jump.

Sounds like KC is still looking for SP and reports say they dont want to pay Hochevar an estimated $5 million to pitch 70 innings. Anyone think we could swap Dempster for Hochever and throw in a little cash?

Would the Sox want to pay Hochevar close to 10m for a year?

I was thinking split the contracts down the middle. Sure it might be an overpay for value but he took off moving to the pen add him to Koji, Taz, Breslow,Miller and Workman and the pen should be lights out. He saw a 3 mph uptick in his FB and K'd over 10 per 9 innings with a 2.18 B/9 and a .82 whip.

I'd love Hochevar in the pen and one could argue, if the Sox don't have a better option and couldn't dump Dempster's contract, they'd be better served paying Dempster's money but have Hochevar.
One would think KC could do better tho. Trade Hochevar straight for decent prospects then sign a starter or trade him for a better cheaper starter.

Last year Theo made two trades of players for other teams International Slots. This meant that he got to use the extra slot allowance on International draftees.
Seems like when ST shakes out if no team has gone desperate for a starter, this might be a way to go without eating a major portion or any of Demptster's contract.
