Don't you wish you could be a fly on the wall when Cherington and Valentine get together? I can only imagine the following from Ben: " so Bobby, when do you think you might throw Iglesias and Lavarnway out there for a continual look?". And this from Bobby: "we still have a chance. I think we will have a great month. I can feel it! . Link to Britton's article: www.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/content/20120915-in-dismal-september-red-sox-doing-little-to-prepare-for-the-future.eceFrom Steve of Bradenton: "so Bobby why is Aviles and Salty playing so much and not the kids?" (Please try to be a bit more precise w/ thread titles - Mods)

Continuing to play Aviles and Saltalamacchia doesn't have to do with "having a chance." It's because they've been (relatively) productive and reliable all season, and it's understandable why a manager wouldn't want to just suddenly dump them to play some kids.
I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but it's more understandable. That said, I don't get why Aviles isn't just playing more third base while Ciriaco has started there all but one game since Punto was traded.

Lavarnway has appeared in 30 games since his call up. With 95 ABs, that averages better than 3 per game, no counting BBs. So, he's started in most of those games.
Iglesias seems lost at the plate, batting 0.77. I'm sure Bobby's picking his spots with this kid. My opinion, anyway, as opposed toBritton.

Tim Britton has written another article over at the Providence Journal. Here is a quote from that article after Valentine pitch hit for Iglesias in the middle of an at bat: "For Valentine, games and wins still matter. Any day he doesn’t lose leaves him one step further from captaining the worst Red Sox season in x-number of years. On Sunday, as it has throughout various points over the past six weeks, that desire conflicted with what was best for the organization. Iglesias has been the shortstop of the future for three years now, and it’s about time the Red Sox got a read on whether he can be the shortstop of the present. More than three weeks since being promoted in the middle of a hot streak from Pawtucket, Boston has learned exactly nothing about Iglesias at the major-league level."Please read...... www.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/content/20120916-valentines-pinch-hit-call-the-most-baffling-decision-in-a-season-full-of-them.ece
