w ho do you think should be added to the 40 man roster and avoid the rule 5 draft? I voted for Brentz, Cecchini & Renaudo I'm not sure what happened to my last post. I hope this doesn't double post, but I am surprised that there isn't more action in this thread as it is the day the 40 man rosters must be set for the Rule 5 draft. Read on the twitter that Sox are adding Ranaudo, Cecchini, and Brentz only and also heard it on WEEI... with 4 spots open and only 3 players protected does that mean that the Sox might have signed a player that we have not heard of yet? I'm hoping it is Corey Hart personally as I think there is a great fit there... but what does everyone else feel about them only protecting three kids? If you read this thread, you'll see that I already explained that they need to save space for signing free agents. As it is, they will still have to trade a player or two to accommodate them.

Adding a 4th player like Almanzar or Diaz means the roster is at 39 after you non-tender Bailey. Now, you need to add a catcher, at least one position player (e.g., Napoli), probably a RHR, and probably a backup SS. Now you're up to 43. You're probably trading Jake Peavy (or Demspter or Morales) and Dan Butler (or Lavarnway), but if you add a 4th guy, it likely means DFA'ing Villareal, or trading Wilson, or doing something else counter-productive. Oh, and who opted not to protect Cechhini? Good analysis. I like the Sox adding Hart who can spell right field and platoon with Carp. That's one spot. Either that or Naps, but my gut is saying that the Sox want to get the draft pick for him instead. We definitely need a spot for a catcher and a utility guy... would the Sox have the guts to just stay with Brock Holt as that util guy? I doubt it, but stranger things have happened. The Sox also have four catchers on the 40 man, so do we absolutely need to go out and sign another one? No, but we would likely drop down in production. I think the Sox do what they did last year and wait until December to let the dominoes start to fall. That way they can excite the season ticket holders who can pay 5% higher ticket prices than last year.

I Think it's pretty obvious that the sox are stockpiling the hottest commodity in baseball (other than young cost controlled arms) and that's RH-power . Since the end of the season everyone has been talking about how hard it is to come by and the sox have 3 young sluggers (Brentz, WMB and Lavarnway) who either can be used as trade chips or rotated into the line-up.
You have to feel that they are gambling a bit on Almanzar, but how likely is he to stick on an MLB roster. The guy is still pretty raw, has never played above AA and has a rumored work ethic problem.

Then we'd be really good at soccer. No really, just the big three. Anyone else will have to be DFA'd, and it's much easier for another team to keep em if they don't have to hold them at the MLB for the year.

It means they felt that only those three were worth protecting, and not much more. Don't read into it too much. They usually keep at least one spot open anyway. On more than one occasion they've selected a player in Rule 5 for another team in order to trade that player to the requesting organization, for example.

It was a no-brainer, which is likely why there's no discussion.
There is no reason to fill the 40-man roster at this time. The team would rather maintain some flexibility.
