Re: Xander He looks good offensively, obviously. Just a beautiful swing, and such impressive gains in plate discipline. But I've been concentrating more on his defense, and I don't think it's been that impressive. He's got a strong arm, but his range has been average at best and his footwork has been a little sloppy at times (i.e., throwing off-balance rather than setting his feet first). Maybe my standards are just too high, having watched Drew and Iglesias last year, but there have been at least a couple ground balls that I thought a better defensive shortstop would have gotten to. I agree. I'm not seeing the range at all and can't see how it can improve much. For me, I hope Marrero winds up with an average bat and pushes XB over to 3b because I am so big on defense after last year.

Where is the guy who wanted to get rid of JBJ?

Seriously? Bogaerts is just so good that we don't say anything about a 3 hit night? I'm a little concerned with his .111 ISO.

I love me some IF defense, but if Xander is an average shortstop defensively (or even slightly below-average), his overall package as a shortstop is so extraordinarily valuable that I'd be loathe to move him off the position. But, hey, a question for another day ... I'm just gonna enjoy him this year.

@jtomase @gordonedes Bogaerts has been on base more this season than the Yankees. All of them.

Drew was a fantastic defensive shortstop. I don't believe the Sox would have made it through the playoffs without those stops he made. I too am surprised that he doesn't gave a gig yet.
Agree, Uehara has been magnificent, zenlike is the only way to describe it. But Tazawa must be from the same planet as Koji, just focused so well on the task at hand. BP wrote him up big time this year, mentioning how his velocity had pushed up to as high as 96, and that killer split to go with it, all the while flying under the radar. Mujica really impressed, also.
Jim Palmer, who's as good in the booth as he was on the mound, went over each of them in detail during the series. This is as good a group of relievers a they've had, I believe. The pens have changed so much in the last few dozen years that it's hard to compare, but this one looks to be shutdown.

Today's line-up: Nava RF, Pedroia 2B, Ortiz DH, Napoli 1B, Carp LF, Sizemore CF, Bogaerts SS, Pierzynski C, Middlebrooks 3B, Peavy RHP
So Pierzynski is like batting the pitcher 8th? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thought Bradley would get some time in right. Oh well

And /sigh. Nava in RF. Hopefully it's just because it's the home opener. IMO, JBJ should just be put in CF and left there and find room to play Sizemore elsewhere.
I'm not even convinced Sizemore is a better hitter than JBJ and the defense doesn't compare.

So this is the place to talk about the Brewers, right?

Drew was great defensively in the playoffs last year but overall in his career he has been a negative UZR/150 and on average cost his team 2 runs per year as compared to the average SS ( Fangraphs DRS ). No doubt his UZR/150 has been trending up recently but his DRS has been trending down. Given sample size considerations on stats like UZR/150 being in the 3 years or more range to be statistically accurate I think it is pretty likely that Drew is about average defensively at SS. And it appears that most of baseball agrees or he would have been signed by now.

Well it is certainly a unique bullpen given the penchant for strike-throwers. Tazawa does give up a lot of hits despite his impeccable control so it is unclear what the issue is there. He usually sits in the 92-93 range but a few times last year was able to crank 95-96. I believe that a short-coming in the pen is the lack of a RH power arm. Also, we have already gone to Tazawa in each of three games.....can't do that forever as that was an Achilles heel last season.

Yes, when you lump in the season in which he was recovering from a severe ankle injury, his career defensive numbers look middling. But he looked well above-average in 2013, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a single scout or analyst who thinks otherwise.
