It's remarkable how the prospect inventory collapses below Portland. Paw and Portland look great but after that it's pretty bleak. Johnson and Littrell are interesting but neither has big upside. I'm beginning to worry about the Sox post Theo/Mcleod drafting.

That might be somewhat true on the position player side, but the pitching side is stacked. Each of the pitching staffs in Salem, Greenville, and Lowell contain at least three or four arms with clear major-league potential.

Well, I've been spoiled a bit. I don't agree agree with your pitching assessment but I can see why you are intrigued. Mercedes is interesting, and the others seem to have upside of bullpen pitchers. Littrell appears to be the only starter, although Johnson is a late developing mixed college pitcher/position player and could make a quick climb.

McLeod was gone for the 2011 draft class that produced Barnes, Owens, JBJ, Swihart, and Betts (plus Kukuk, Travis Shaw, etc). That was still Theo, but Cherington's drafts are too new to really judge, even if you think the GM and not the amateur scouting director runs those things.
But, even so, gotta agree with jmei on this one, there are definitely many quality arms in the lower minors ... Light, Mercedes, Johnson, Kukuk, Callahan, Stank, Myles Smith, Ball, and on and on. Almost no quality position player prospects that were drafted (as opposed to signed internationally), but it's hard to draft good position player prospects when you don't actually draft any position player prospects ...

Greenville is more interesting than last year before Mookie went Tim Raines on us. They may not be highly rated prospect yet but Margot, Rijo, Callahan, Kukuk, Stankiewicz, Smith etc. are worth following, some could be "highly" rated by this time next year.
As for the post Theo draft I think it's way too early. Most of the same people remain here so the proces is the same with a few tweaks here and there. Amiel Sawdaye runs that and has been in the organization a long time. Also I think we are begining to see the effects of the new draft rules. Had they been able to sign Ryan Boldt or Alex Bregman to name two the system would be more "sexy" for some.
Where I think Cherington has put his stamp is with his International staff, making big changes and growing the staff. It's only been two years so there is no way to judge if it's been good or bad but so far there is not much to argue with. It takes years to read that and even then what criteria is going to be used to judge? It's on the eye of the beholder.

I don't think it is too early to say the past few drafts aren't as strong as some in the years prior, but blaming it on the management team is misguided. They are working with a completely different set of rules that doesn't allow them to exploit the system the way the team had done under the old CBA. |

1) I was just using the names to give an idea 2) plenty of players droped even in the old system, especially when there was injury involved like these two players 3) It is clear they liked Boldt a lot given all they did to try to sign him so in the old rules they would have poped him earlier ala Cecchini.
Anyways the point I was making is that the draft rules have negatively affected their ability to do what they did under Theo.

Well, in the news under red-sox-who-DON'T-suck are Brentz with a 2b, Meneses and Hassan walking in each of their plate appearances so far, and Webster who has 3 innings of 1-WHIP ball (can that be a thing?) No K's for him, but efficiency with 31/46 pitches for strikes.
ADD: Holt has also yet to make an out.
And is there any chance Meneses is a prospect?

Having a black hole in Salem is little price to pay for the strength at AAA and AA. Typically, the void is at the AAA level with the top advanced prospects at AA and a good mix between High A and full season Low A.
