The stars look aligned for a win in Portland today. Go Seadogs!
That sure looks like a good team to watch this year.

Pitches-strikes: Owens 39-31 for 4 innings.

Winston-Salem trying to protect its forebears, up 1-0 against Salem. C'mon, Salem!
In other news, Hank Owens is ridiculous.

That Wendelken trade biting us in the ass right now, Salem getting no-hit through 4, down 3-0.

Salem battles back to within 1, 3-2 after the sixth. Evan Lepler going crazy, I'm sure. Someday, my grandchildren will ask me, "Gramps, do you remember where you were when the Salem Red Sox won their 17th in a row?" And I'll think for a moment, look at them solemnly, and say, "Who are you?"

Owens keeps throwing strikes. Pitches-strikes: Owens 39-31 for 4 innings. Yes. Great start with 9 K and 0 BBs. Now 18 K to 2 BBs on a very small sample to start the season. This is one progression that I'd hope to see this season. Positive beginning. I know its early in the season but does anyone have radar gun readings for his FB and CH so far.

Yes, I'm interested in his radar readings too. If he's 89-91, there's only so far he can go. Could still be very good, but it limits things a bit, especially once he starts losing it like all pitchers seem to.

Owens is fascinating to follow. There are some detractors because he does not make the radar gun jump, but they just do not hit him so far. A lot of pitching is a certain feel of what to throw, where to throw it, and how much speed he certainly seems to have that feel ( if you know what I mean). How is his command? I would not b concerned if he does not hit 95.

During the game the announcer gave the radar reading on one fastball at 86 and a curve of 64. Also made a comment that his change is usually 15 mph slower than his fastball. The video feed was pretty crappy, but looked like he may have topped out in the low 90's to me, nothing exceptional with velocity. The two lefties he faced seemed to have lots of trouble seeing the ball out of his hand, they looked completely lost. Especially an at bat by Mason Williams going down on 3 pitches including a 58 foot curveball. Owens was in the strikezone all day and was really keeping the ball down well. If he ever sees an uptick in his velocity to sit 91-94 he could really be special.

Bereft. Inconsolable. Walking through my day in a haze of disappointment and despair.

Was at the portland game last night. Owens was sitting 86-88 with his fastball. Topped out at 90-92 when he needed to reach back. A lot of balls were hit hard but right at outfielders. Absolutely fooled hitters with the curve. Made Gary Sanchez swing and miss twice in a row at it in the dirt. Also of note the 3b should not be playing 3b, pretty bad D there, he has no range at all. Also Owens made a nice fielding play on a bunt, nailed the runner at second with a quick and accurate throw where i thought he would have no shot and shouldve just settled for the runner at first.
Edit- Don't even think he through his change up much, if at all. All I noticed was his curve and fastball, which should be good considering his change is his best pitch, and he dominated without it.

FWIW, his changeup has a good amount of drop to it and is about the same speed as the curve. If you didn't have a great angle, I could see mistaking it for the curve.
Not saying there's no way he shelved the change for a night either though.

Thanks for the update. I'm not as concerned with the FB velocity per say as lefties generally do not need to throw at the same velocity as righties to succeed (when they have at least one plus secondary) but I am hoping to see a small uptick from Owens as he physically matures adding greater leg strength and drive but I'm not sure he needs much to be a solid 5 going on a 4 as he currently is constituted.

Alex Speier, in his write-up of Owens' start, notes that he did throw changeups and indeed got 13 swings-and-misses on the pitch.

I might be mistaking his change for the curve cause one pitch just fooled everyone so that sounds like the change up
