What is the deal with putting Brentz in LF and Hassan in RF? I thought Brentz had the best arm.

What is the deal with putting Brentz in LF and Hassan in RF? I thought Brentz had the best arm. The goal of the minor leagues isn't to win minor league games. It's to prepare players to contribute and win at the major league level. Brentz doesn't project as a plus-defensive right fielder and certainly wouldn't play there ahead of a healthy Victorino, so it makes sense to give him experience in left. For example, in 2010, Pawtucket would shuffle Josh Reddick, Ryan Kalish, Daniel Nava, and Bubba Bell around all three outfield positions.

Also, I'm not sure that Brentz does have the better arm. Hassan was a two-way player in college and has a pretty strong arm as well.

I think it's pretty clear that Brentz does have the better arm these days. I saw Hassan make 3-4 throws this spring that, after reading reports of him having a good arm, shocked me with how weak they were. Brentz, on the other hand, was firing rockets. Obviously you can't make a complete evaluation based off a few spring training plays, but the difference between them was significant, to say the least.

Ruby is flying under the radar and he may have the highest ceiling of all our prospects. At least some of it is because he's not a prospect by definition so can't be on any lists, but he's a prospect in every sense of the word.

Keith Couch might have something to say about thatIn all seriousness, though, another outstanding start by Couchy. If AAA wasn't loaded with pitching prospects, he'd be there. Couch will pitch in the majors someday. Probably not for Boston, but I think he'll make it the show for someone.

Definitely flying under the radar especially considering he showed some mild success in the majors in a SSS back in 2011. Has shown great stuff and an ability to get major leaguers out, could really be a factor at some point this year.

Betts doesn't look like he's slowing down for AA. He's hitting .464 so far, with 3 doubles, a triple, a home run, four walks, and only three strikeouts. I'd love to see more scouting on him (that is a hint).

To me it's a tossup as to next April's #1. Assuming Bogaerts, Webster, Bradley, Workman are not elligible I think any of Swihart, Cechinni, Betts or Owens could be the #1. And if anything, Betts is already towards the top of that list so far to me. Good defense. Speed. Pop. Attitude. Hitting approach. Base stealing. Positional value. He seems like the total package and in the transition to AA ball so far he hasn't slowed up a nanosecond.
He's the ever ready battery of baseball players. He's always full power.
A lot of speed oriented players have to learn to drive the ball when they get to the majors; i.e. Ellsbury...etc. Betts is already driving the ball all over the place, hitting for high average and very high OBP.

Obviously a SSS but still very impressive. In what is assumed to be a huge jump and at a young age does not seem to be challenging Betts yet.
Across all levels really the vast majority of the top 20 prospects have gotten off to great starts. Even beyound those guys the system is off to a great start....and these guys are getting closer.

Betts needs to play on a different team than Marrero so he can give shortstop a run. Scouting reports are not terrible on his arm, I bet he could at least be a competent shortstop. If not, maybe a utility guy if his ceiling comes down as he progresses, either way I would love to see him get a chance at short. Though probably a terrible idea to challenge him with a position change mid-season

If I recall correctly, Betts was a SS before he was a 2B. So it really wouldn't be a position switch.

One could argue the best defensive alignment for the left side as early as next season could be Vazquez at C, Bogaerts at 3B, Marrero at SS and Betts in LF. May take a leap of faith on Mookie defensively but I'm buying his athleticism to do so. This alignment of course once again breaches the question what to do with Middlebrooks and Cecchini? I don't see how one of Middlebrooks, Cecchini or Betts isn't traded at some point by the 2015 All Star break. Only way around it would be Marrero as a utility, Bogaerts sticks at SS, Middlebrooks and Cecchini handle 1b and 3b in some form and Mookie plays LF.
I also wonder if Swihart has the build for long term catching. I wonder if it isn't in the best interest to have him catch only 2 or 3 times a week at the Major League level and play 1B, LF or RF the other days to keep his bat (assuming projected development) in the lineup and prevent the wear on his body as we see on Mauer and Posey. This seems very plausible with a defensive whiz in Vazquez on the roster.
