Sox-related talk in Josh Norris' Hot Sheet chat ... John Doe (Makeupnameville, Mass): Do you know if the Red Sox plan to start Simon Mercedes? Josh Norris: Funny you should ask about Mr. Mercedes. Our second installment of Scout's Video View focused on him today: www.baseballamerica.com/minors/scouts-video-view-simon-mercedes/. They're piggybacking him now to manage his innings (he had just 63 1/3 last year) but keeping him on a starter's schedule certainly gives the indications that they will in the future. MJ (Chicago): Mookie is getting a lot of attention now, but still not a ton of respect when it comes to prospect rankings. Why do you think that is? Josh Norris: I don't think this is true at all. I mean, he was No. 7 on our Red Sox list and No. 75 on our top 100. He'll definitely move up the chain on the team list simply by virtue of Bradley and Bogaerts graduating to the land of Fenway. Mark (Boston): What do you see as the ceiling for Mookie Betts in his prime? If you had to re-rank prospects, where would Betts fall in the top 100 right now? Josh Norris: All-Star second baseman. Higher than 75. Bob (Madison NC): who are your top three middle infield prospects in the South Atlantic League this year? Josh Norris: J.P. Crawford, Abiatal Avelino, Cleuluis Rondon Mookie Betts (Oregon): I'm so good that I would be a better CF than JBJ. Trade him and bring me to field the Triangle! Josh Norris: Look, Mookie, I love you a lot (even though I know you're lying about being from Oregon). But you would not be a better center fielder than Jackie Bradley.

Bob (Madison NC): who are your top three middle infield prospects in the South Atlantic League this year? Josh Norris: J.P. Crawford, Abiatal Avelino, Cleuluis Rondon What? Cleuluis Rondon, he of the .274/.328/.311 triple-slash, over Rijo? Rondon is an admittedly much better defender who plays shortstop, but the bat isn't even close to comparable. Grumble grumble grumble.

That would be awesome if only Mookie made the team.

I didn't see this mentioned elsewhere yet, but Owens made this week's hot sheet. The blurb on him mentions the difficulty opposing players have picking up his fastball and also compares his performance in the pool of starts where he has good control (0.86 ERA, 35 K : 6 BB) to the those starts where he does not (4.26 ERA, 33 K : 24 BB). The hot sheet chat (with Ben Badler) also mentions a few Sox players. Most significantly, he thinks that Mookie is a top 20 prospect in baseball right now.

Didn't know where to put this. Theo got ripped pretty good for picking Kyle Schwarber with the 4th pick. Means nothing long-term. But, he's off to an incredible start. In 14 games between Northwest and Midwest league. He got promoted in 5 games!! LOL. 8 hr's. 520/583/1140 for a decent OPS of 1723. The new Bambino? www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=schwar001kyl

Are the scouts around baseball back to being positive about Ball?

Hazim (New York): Any recent updates on Trey Ball? The numbers seem to have gotten better over the last month or so.
J.J. Cooper: Stuff has gotten better too. He's gotten some arm speed back (touching some 93s) and has improved his breaking ball. As one scout who saw him early and late said, "he's not what you would expect from a top 10 pick, but with his athleticism, you're seeing positive signs he's putting it together."
Luam (Ohio): What are scouts saying about Manuel Margot? Any chance he sneaks into the back of the top 100?
J.J. Cooper: Absolutely a chance. One of the most interesting prospects in the Sally League. Plays a solid CF, very good bat-to-ball skills, power potential and speed. He's having a great year for a 19-year-old in the Sally League.
From the chat.

www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-aug-22/ 6. Eduardo Rodriguez, lhp, Red Sox
Age: 21 Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.70, 13 IP, 13 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 12 SO
The Scoop: So far, the Red Sox have to be very pleased with their return from the Orioles for lefty reliever Andrew Miller. In four starts with the Sea Dogs, Rodriguez has worked to a 2-0, 0.74 mark with just two runs surrendered over 24 innings. He’s fanned 28 against six walks with his new club. The Eastern League repeater features a lively fastball in the mid-90s as well as a curveball and changeup that both have the potential to be plus offerings in the future.
Not so hot: Deven Marrero, ss, Red Sox. A 1-for-18 week at Triple-A Pawtucket dropped Marrero’s line at that level to .220/.272/.300 through 41 games. Don’t lose heart. He’s still an elite defender, and he hit .291/.371/.433 at Double-A this season, so some time to adjust to a new level is warranted.

From the chat:
Mike (Virginia): What were your first impressions after seeing Manny Margot the other night? Josh Norris: I got a very bad look at him. He was overaggressive at the dish at times, took some ugly hacks at others, and loafed his way into an out on the bases. Short, catchable fly to shallow right, it dropped. He jogged to first, then when it dropped he kicked it into gear toward second but was out.
Mike (Virginia): Who has more upside: Henry Owens or Eduardo Rodriguez? Josh Norris: I’m going to go with Rodriguez here. I got a very good look at him the other day in Richmond, and what I saw was very good. A good hard fastball up to 96 mph with excellent plane and life coupled with a sharp slider and a solid changeup. He was aggressive in the zone and on the inner half. Owens is good, but there are questions about the quality of his breaking ball and his ability to command the fastball within the zone.
T. Bilodeau (Levine, NY): As a Red Sox fan, what should I think about the Castillo signing? I know he is not on the Hot Sheet, but wow! Josh Norris: You should be excited. Your player development group is very good. He’s an excellent addition to an already enviable group of prospects.
I hadn't even thought about that ... where does he rank in our top 20?

I didn't think about that either. Since he isn't likely to exhaust his rookie eligibility, this should vault us up the team prospect rankings. I can't see how he can't be #1 since he's 27 with experience and deemed major league ready. Similar situation to when we signed Dice-K who entered the majors as the #1 prospect except we'll have him as a prospect all winter (no player comp intended). . . . Red Sox Stats ?@redsoxstats 4h Edes quotes a Red Sox evaluator saying Castillo's power is "plus-plus" in their eyes and "runs as good as anybody in the league." . . . EDITADD: I'm not sure which prospect rankings, if any or all, limit their rankings to prospects under age 25.

. EDITADD: I'm not sure which prospect rankings, if any or all, limit their rankings to prospects under age 25. I know BA ranks the Japanese/Cuban guys. Keith Law does not. BP I don't know. My guess is he'll be #2 behind Mookie on BA's list.

Chat, nothing surprising: www.baseballamerica.com/minors/baseball-america-prospect-hot-sheet-chat-aug-29-josh-norris/tatum (Las vegas): Josh, What organization has the most minor league arms, ready to take an MLB mound in 2104/2015? Hou? Bos? thanks Josh Norris: Boston would be on the top of my list. Henry Owens, Anthony Ranaudo, Matt Barnes and Brian Johnson all could see time in The Fens next year. [...] Jake's Richard (Moldy South): Who has the best change up in the minors? Josh Norris: That title belongs to Mr. Henry Owens. [...] Nils Erickson - Dillon (IBC LEAGUE - USA): Who do you like in the long term behind the dish,Blake Swihart or Kyle Schwarber? Josh Norris: If we’re gonna say behind the dish, Swihart. He’s extremely athletic and has great arm.
