I'm not a Showalter fan but this is cool:
Eduardo A. Encina ?@eddieintheyard 56m Buck on early start: "We know why. This has something 2 do with the marathon. It’s something very important to our country, not just Boston"

Where are the people who argued with me all winter about changing the roster composition to include a RH CF/RF backup so we only have to see Nava in RF in emergency situations (not for 112 of the 123 innings he has played so far this season not including today's game)? And not while facing LHP and putting up a -65 wRC+. I didn't even realize wRC+ could be negative. Does that indicate worse than is possible? It's really not fair that Nava is used in any situation other than as the platoon LF that he is. But that is the way it is because the roster isn't right. Sizemore would be perfect if he were RH and could play RF and was even close to as good defensively as he used to be. I honestly don't remember the desire for a RH-hitting backup CF being controversial at all. In fact, my memory is of discussion of the difficulty in actually finding one that's useful at a reasonable price.

Why on earth does Buck have Cruz in Fenway's RF with Lough in LF? Lough was fantastic in RF for the Royals last season.

And the squeeze is on early for the strike zone. As long as it's consistent I won't be too pissed off...

Brock Holt hitting leadoff, Bogaerts hitting sixth. It lengthens the lineup but gives more at-bats to a clearly inferior hitter in Holt. Hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, and Holt is the kind of guy who isn't an awful leadoff candidate (he makes a ton of contact and makes pitchers throw a lot of pitches), but I still don't really like it.

Nava's at bats are painful to watch. Hope they send him down and he gets straightened out. Might be able to help us down the stretch. Just ain't cutting it right now.

It was probably 50-50, with those opposed using the "We just won the WS with Nava in RF for half the season" argument. I was big on Chris Young, Rajai Davis and Peter Bourjos.

Brock Holt can't make it a play. Shocking.

Two soft ground ball singles and a jammed bloop single. And the catchable popup foul

At some point you have to make a pitch. When everything is up in the zone, BABIP will obviously bite you in the ass.

Too bad Buch didn't allow that ball to SS be hit harder.

Embarrassing inning for Buchholz. Kind of just gave up after the first two singles.

Embarrassing inning for Buchholz. Kind of just gave up after the first two singles. Not to pile on with the Nava hate, but with anyone else, there's at least a chance on that last flyball.

As long as Buchholz is hucking high-80s fastballs and cutters without incredible command, he's going to give up a ton of hits. Don't tell me it's bad BABIP luck. I don't know if he's hurting or if this is the new him, but he's an absolute shell of his former self. Give me Doubront, Capuano, or Workman over this.

This is not the Buchholz of years past. Something is wrong. Who is the first starter up from Pawtucket?

The last two hits have been total meltdowns, but before that, he gave up like two hard-hit balls. **** happens.

At some point you have to make a pitch. When everything is up in the zone, BABIP will obviously bite you in the ass. Unless they hit those soft ground balls to players and you have good enough defense to catch foul popups and fly balls to RF. Then you give up 0 hits and you're out of the inning.

The last two hits have been total meltdowns, but before that, he gave up like two hard-hit balls. **** happens. Come on now. Lombo hit a liner up the middle, Lough and Cruz didn't really sting their hits but they were legitimate, and Davis got a good piece of his. Only Markakis had a really cheap one on the jam shot. That was a horrible inning from Buch and he entirely deserves to be slapped with at least 4 or 5 runs.

Except a pitcher with a semblance of "stuff" would be able to miss a bat at some point to break that string. Buchholz has zero stuff right now. Of course he's going to get bitten in the ass by BABIP.

All the more reason to go with the superior defense. It makes pitchers look better than they are and takes a shitload of stress off the bullpen. Not only does it save runs, but it saves pitches, sometimes a lot of them.
