Victorino should be rehabbing with the PawSox today. Unknown how long, he only got in 10 spring training games before his injury.

Betts sure looks like a legitimate leadoff man.

Betts sure looks like a legitimate leadoff man. 3 for 3 (2 runs scored) so far, all singles. The first two were hit hard but the third one was interesting to listen to Mike Antonelis descripe. It was a two hopper to the second baseman and Mike was surprised he was able to beat it out. For all his speed, very few of Mookie's hits are infield hits, he usually hits the ball pretty solid, at least, whenever I've listened. His batting average is back up over .450. Aguilara is throwing a lot of strikes tonight, he's been way ahead of almost everybody. Not overpowering like Pena though but seems to locate well. ADD: He also takes a ton of pitches. Struck out the fourth time up on a full count questionable strike call (they must be preparing him for Red Sox umpiring). Easter here, mabuhay

Anyone know why McCarthy pitched in the 7th of the Portland game? He would be in line for the next start Mon at Binghamton. I need to travel from MA back to DC on Mon or Tue, so I need to know which game Owens will pitch, any help would be appreciated thanks

Mookie with a 4 hit game and his 2nd HR of the year, a leadoff high fly to LF.
jchang, sorry I was away from the radio when they made the pitching change so, I don't know why. With three rainouts, that's going to be a tough one to figure out.
ADD: Antonelis comment at the time 'WOW, are his hands quick'.
ADD2: It's not also out of the realm of possibilities that they are making room in the rotation for Brian Johnson who I was surprised didn't make the roster in the first place.
Aguilara with a nicely pitched game, set up the hitters well and executed the out pitches he wanted causing weak contact.

Salem has 8 pitchers on our prospect list, highest is Johnson at 20, 3 more between 21-40 and 4 in 41-60 group. Of the position players, there is only David Chester at 52. Salem currently has 4 player BA over .300, of which 2 have many years in the minors. Still, perhaps will make Gragnani or Heller an honorary prospect so Salem has some representation on the prospects list?

I think Heller will be soon but Gragnani isn't a starter, he only has 29 ABs and he has no power or speed. He's likely to get ABs until WMB gets back because Heiker is in Pawtucket covering for Holt.

Vazquez with a 9th inning walkoff single (2/4 with a double) wins the game 1-0. He also threw out a runner. If I didn't miss anything in the last couple of days, he's now thrown out 6 of 11 attempts.
Greenville game suspended. Alcantara with another less than great start, Smith with a few shutout innings in relief. Rijo is 2/3 with a double.
Salem won 2-0 Haley (6 innings), Younginer and Stroup solid. Heller 1/3 with another double.

I think they want betts and Marrerro playing together.
I hope Xander stays at ss but....
Mayber within 18 to 24 months we are looking at Betts at 2nd, marrero at ss, Petey at 3rd, Xander in Left.

Although I'll have to admit that I'm a lot higher on Morrero than I was before spring training, he still has a huge hill to climb. His nice SSS start is accompanied by a high BABIP, an increased strike out rate and decreased walks. When you listen to his at bats, he isn't in charge yet, he needs to take a deep breath and stop swinging at pitchers pitches. I have a lot of hopes that he'll improve his discipline and batting eye over the course of the year. If he does that, I can see him forcing his way into the mix in the future. I personally think he has a much higher hitting ceiling than Iglesias did at the same stage of their careers. I'm not saying I think he's going to be a force, just much better than Iglesias, enough so that combined with his glove, he could move Xander off SS. I don't think a healthy Iglesias could force a move of Xander from SS. I already said a few days ago that I don't think Mookie moving Pedroia from second base is out of the question down the road.

As much as I like Pedroia, he has benefited a lot from being slotted in front of Ortiz. The time will come when we chose to put Bogaerts in that slot, and when that happens Bogaerts will emerge even more as a hitter. If Bogaerts gets more pitches to hit, he will do a lot of damage.
If anyone moves any time soon, (Pedroia or Betts}, it is prettty certain to be Betts I would think, and I am clearly on the Betts train at this point. I'm looking forward to potentially seeing him play the entire Trenton series next week.
What to do with the Mookster is probably going to become a hot topic on this forum real soon.

Mookie's batting average is nearly three times his weight.

No question Mookie is a big part of it but hey, the Portland team BA thru 14 games is a whopping .305

From the Speier piece I linked in the Mookie thread:
Right-hander Anthony Ranaudo turned in his best outing of the season, firing six shutout innings and permitting just two hits (both singles) and two walks while striking out five. He threw 62 of 92 pitches (67 percent) for strikes, working down in the zone with better velocity (93-95 mph) than he’d shown through his first three starts, through which he’d more often topped out at 93 mph (while sitting around 89-91) than sitting at that mark that characterized a baseline for most of his outings in 2013. The right-hander entered the day having allowed 14 runs (10 earned) in 14 1/3 innings; with his outing on Saturday, his ERA dropped from 6.28 to 4.35.

Hopefully this good news is the start of a trend for Ranaudo. I think that he is one guy who will have to pitch at higher velocities to be successful.
