Xander seems to have settled down and made a great play last night. I was all for signing Drew to make the team better but have come down with buyers remorse. Suddenly a WMBS/Holt platoon at 3B with X at SS doesn't seem all bad.

I mean, one play shouldn't really sway our decision that much, should it? I don't think we signed Drew because we felt that Xander couldn't cut it at SS (though that wasn't irrelevant to the decision). I think we signed Drew cause WMB is hurt (a lot) and sucked when he was healthy. I'm on the fence like you, and I'm glad it's a one year deal, and I think for this year, it's a crucial signing and probably should have happened earlier.

Yea it wasn't just one play but just in general. Drew was the best option to improve the left side and I understand that.

I still hate that all these decisions about Xander are being made because of people around him instead of just doing what is best for Xander. Sure, we might get more production for a few months, but what about the big picture?

Is losing those reps really going to hurt his development all that much?

Sure, we might get more production for a few months, but what about the big picture? The big picture of winning, or big picture of Xander making the hall-of-fame in a Yankees uni? I'm pushing for the former, and as long as JF is good about getting Xander some time at SS against LHP (or whenever), then I'm cool with a little less time for him to practice fielding the position in the middle of a penant race.

Well, it's just a piece slamming Shaughnessy for mentioning "the Bogaerts-Middlebrooks failure" and quoting a Gammons tweet indirectly slamming CHB.
But, it's as good a time as ever to mention that Xander Bogaerts is a baseball god who is going to be at least as good as we all thought. I watch him put up an .810 OPS as a shortstop, and I honestly think that he's going to get a lot better. There really may only be one person in baseball that I'd trade him for ... at least I can't think of a second.

Let's keep this thread on topic. Thanks.
BTW, he looks much better on defense.

I think some people forget that players go into defensive slumps and tears just as much as they do offensively.

I was ecstatic with the improvements Xander made last season. I certainly hope he improves, but I would settle for the same....if his power starts to arrive.
His accuracy of his throwing to first was 100% better. Stephen Drew was never a big favorite, but one of the things I really liked about him.....was he always made accurate throws to 2nd and 1st. I really appreciate that from an infielder. You think it is something to take for granted at times, and then Steve Sax nails an old lady in the 1st row behind first.
I love the great defensive play as much as anyone, but I'd rather have dependability from my fielders.

Will be interesting to see if Xander struggles at all if Hanley has trouble picking/corralling throws an average 1b makes

Likely working to improve accuracy of throws, among other elements of his game. Pedey is so valuable to this team in so many ways, not the least of which is helping XB reach his defensive high-side. Thanks Pedey.
