So we get the toughest part of the tribal rotation with Masterson and Corey "10.7 K/9" Kluber, sandwiching our ongoing problems against LHP.

We match up well with Masterson. He is walking a lot of batters this year, plus he is a RH fastball pitcher. Should take this game with Lackey on the mound. I am not so much worried about House as I am about Peavy. Let's hope he sleeps on his arm wrong and Webster gets the start. Workman v Kluber should be interesting. I see us taking 2. Go Sox!

Yeah, Boston has actually hit pretty well against lefties this year, and their problems have instead been with righties. That said, the lineup they'll run out tomorrow is a good bit different than the ones they've had most of the year vs. lefties, as they're missing three of their lefty-mashers (Napoli, Victorino, and Middlebrooks) and will likely start Drew at SS, so I think there might be some basis for a little anxiety.

Counter argument: the continued existence of Xander Bogaerts.

IIRC Masterson struggles against LHP. Could have a lineup with Holt, Drew, Bradley, Sizemore, Nava, Pierz, and Ortiz. Gomes and Pedroia would be the only RHH.

At this point I would sit Pedrioa over Bogaerts, especially with the hand injury. But instead I would put Holt at 1B, Nava in LF and have the only two RH Pede and Bogey.

Or play Herrera in place of Pedroia or Gomes (with Holt and Nava sliding around for the Gomes swap.)
ADD: Do we finally have our Zobrist clone in Holt? (only half joking)

Not necessarily related to the Indians but I haven't heard much from the Salty people lately which made me curious.
Mar/Apr (93 PA): .299/ .409/ .571/ .980 May ( 89 PA ): .177/ .258/ .241/ .499
Wonder if there's a correlation.
Btw, he's on the 7 day concussion DL right now.

Jon Shestakofsky @shesta_Sox
Red Sox have won 7 straight, tying the MLB record for longest win streak immediately after a 10+ game losing streak (1st since DET 1989).
Going for the record tonight

Salty has been on a free fall since early in the season. Best decision the Sox FO made was not tendering him a QO, plus not getting involved with LT discussions with him. He has looked sick at the plate in Miami for a team that really needs offense, other than Stanton and McGehee, but instead has turned into another John Buck sign there.

Regarding Drew and Bogaerts change...I am going to keep an open mind....but damn if you couldn't have picked a worse time to ask the kid to make a change.

He has looked sick at the plate in Miami for a team that really needs offense, other than Stanton and McGehee, but instead has turned into another John Buck sign there. Neither of those lines are representative of the player Salty is. You can't argue that the 89 PA slump is more telling than the 93 PA heater. Salty also has always been a streaky player. Average those lines together and we get something useful to look at. 237/335/404. That is Salty. Low batting average, takes walks but will never have a "good" OBP, and will hit with some power. That is still good for a 106 WRC, which is a lot better than we are currently getting from any one of our outfielder's at the moment. Let's look at his stats with a little perspective Against McCann, and Pierzynski www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=5557,4810,746 Against all qualifying catchers www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=c&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2014&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0I was a bit outspoken at the time that the Sox should have gave him a QO. I realize now if he accepted it, it would have been a mistake, albeit a small, non roster crippling Carl Crawford mistake. But the deal he has now is a bargain. At 5M per WAR he was worth 18M last year alone. Without an injury he should easily get 6 war over 3 years which at any rate per WAR will surpass the 21M he will make. He will also be 31 when his contract expires so these are still prime years. And two years from now if we had youngsters ready he would have been a great trade piece at 7M per year.

Dude, I think you're underestimating the amount of "energetic energy" Gomes brings to the team.Right that's why Red Sox outfielders have a 214/296/329 line. Seriously this is ridiculous. Let me try to put this in a 5th grade word problem format. Nava is a good hitter when facing RHP. Gomes is a good hitter when facing LHP. Nava is a terrible hitter when facing LHP. Gomes is a terrible hitter when facing RHP. When should Nava start in left field? When should Gomes start in left field? Please write in complete sentences.

I'm honestly surprised by how reactionary they've been with Nava, especially since his peripherals are not that much worse than they were last year. It's like they're pretending that his 2013 never happened. If they were prepared to move on from him that quickly, they need a better backup plan than Gomes versus RHP.

It's absolutely pathetic on Farrell's part. There's no way to make sense of it -- it's wrong and it's hurting the team. The two enter the day tied in wRC+ vs. RHP, by the way, with Gomes having 17 more PA's. Nava's getting no chance to move past his tough three week slump to kick off the season, where he got some terrible luck (.154 BABIP) but still posted far better BB% and K% numbers than Gomes, and even a better OBP (all numbers vs. RHP). But, hey, if we're using those three weeks to judge Nava's ability and disregarding his career performance, what should we use for Gomes? His career where he's sucked vs. RHP (2,212 PA), or 2014 where he's sucked even more?
For lack of a better word, this decision is flat out stupid. Farrell is being stupid.

Dude, I think you're underestimating that italics = sarcasm on this board. You didn't need the italics, I knew that that sarcasm. I guess my top line should of been italicized. I was just belaboring my point. But seriously, unless this is a day off for Nava there is 0 reason Gomes should be starting over him. If anything start him over Sizemore. It even works out better, because Gomes would be available to pinch hit for Sizemore or Nava when they bring in a LHP. Gomes didn't earn a starting spot with his 732 OPS, he has just been surrounded by a terribly performing outfield.

Gomes and Drew on the starting lineup again, Farrell has got to be on cloud 9 right now.

You all-so critical guys have to take into consideration the identity of the opposing pitcher.
Masterson has allowed a .402 wOBA to LHB this year and a .282 wOBA to RHB. Career, he's .348 vs. .271.
Furthermore, Gomes has fanned in his only appearance against him while Nava is 3/6, 2B, 3 HBP, the best OPS versus Masterson of anyone on the active roster. (Masterson had a 4.49 FIP in the three starts.)
Nava has made three outs versus Masterson (one on a LD; he has a career 67 LD% against him) but Gomes has only made one. That, and the law of averages which indicates that the opposite of the above can be expected to happen, are compelling reasons to start Gomes instead of Nava. In fact, given his past success versus Masterson, they might be better off not allowing Nava to dress for the game in order to prevent his success vibes from negating Gomes' energy.
