All of us want the Red Sox to turn things around and repeat last year. It just appears that we don't have that this year. If the team continues to down trend, it wouldn't be bad to consider how we can build a great team for 2015.
With Xander, Drew, Pedroia, Napoli, Brooks, Cecchini, and Betts, I think the infield is all set. An abundance of pitching exists, both starters and relievers. Little concern there.
Outfield from left to right-It's struggling. Sizemore was just DFA'd, Gomes can't hit RHP, Victorino can't stay healthy, Bradley can't hit to save his life, Nava is not much more than a 4th outfielder. I guess the only positive is Holt, who is bound to regress.
The outfield is in a terrible state.
Potential Trade Pieces:
Uehara - An absolute dominant closer who can pitch in October. A reliever can make or break a season in one inning. Teams want a reliable closer.
Lackey - A great starter that will pitch into the 7th or 8th nearly every start. A sub-3.50 ERA guy, lower if in the National League.
Peavy - A serviceable back-end starter that can keep you in the game.
Gomes - A clubhouse guy, that will deliver in the clutch. Any playoff bound team would be happy to have him as a 4th outfielder.
Pierzynski - I would trade him, but it's hard seeing a team trade for him unless they're desperate for a catcher.
Middlebrooks - I still think he will figure it out, but I'm probably alone in that. Some team will want some power off the bench
Carp - Another valuable bench bat
Drew - A shortstop who plays good defense who can hit is extremely valuable to a play-off bound team
Mujica - Likely to regain his effectiveness upon a return to the National League
4 Potential deals with these guys
1) Uehara and Pierzynski, to the Dodgers for.... Joc Pederson, Scott Schebler, Zachary Bird
Pederson isn't getting a shot for a while in crowded LAD outfield. The other two are filler prospects. Dodgers could use another reliable reliever and a catcher.
2) Lackey and Gomes to the Royals for... Jorge Bonifacio and Bubba Starling
The 1st place Royals need a reliable starter that will help in the post season and a good bench bat. For two badly struggling, high ceiling outfielders who need a change in scenery.
3) Peavy to the Angels for Zach Borenstein.
Peavy has little value, getting a decent OF prospect in return isn't bad.
4) Drew, Mujica, and Carp to the Reds for... Jesse Winker, Carlos Contreras
The Reds need an upgrade over the .584 OPS Zach Cozart. Another set-up man and bench bat will help them too. Winker and Contreras, a good OF and pitching prospect, respectively.
These are just some of the possibilities. No matter what, we have the chips to field a great outfield next year. In additions, moving Betts to the outfield is a possibility.
