They have the worst record in baseball. Buster Olney on ESPN thinks they're going to dump some contracts. I'd like to be competitive for the next 2 years until our young guys emerge. A LH bat in LF and Beltre would boost this offense to a good level as long as we keep Lester. Of course, Xander to shortstop in this scenario. Don't think we'd have to give up too much for Adrian. He's due 18m next year with a 16m option in 2016 which can be voided if he doesn't have 600 PA. We have a lot of near ready pitching which they seem to be in need of. Ranaudo and Wright? Oh, 917 OPS for Adrian this year.

Red Sox are not going over the luxury tax threshold this year, so there is no chance IMO that they will add salary, net. If they can trade Peavy and Gomes, then they can consider it; until then, there is no chance.

If the Red Sox don't have a top 10 protected pick, this might be the only route to adding an impact bat because I really don't think they're going to sign any free agents that require them giving up #11-#15. I expect a lot of crying over that this winter. I don't find Beltre very likely though unless the prospect cost isn't that high.

Beltre only makes sense if they're trading both WMB and Marrero in the deal. Problem there is Texas has no use for infielders.

As opposed to anytime in the next year or so? Not sure about WMB, but Marrero could look like the answer to some other team's dreams in 12 mos.

Even if they have a top 10 pick, who are the impact bats that will be free agents? You have to think Hanley goes back to the Dodgers and I'm not sure the Red Sox would be interested regardless. Nelson Cruz? Whoever pays for this year's performance is making a mistake. If the Sox are going to add an impact bat it isn't going to come from free agency IMO.
