Certainly one could start with Xander, but the emphasis of this thread is to mention, what I think, is a very strong influx of YOUNG Latin American talent. Most of the following players are years away. Actually all of them are, but there seems to be a lot of REAL talent in this bunch. Often when I followed the DSL there may be one or two kids to make you follow. The same in the GCL. I now see myself following diligently these teenagers:
Wendell Rijo 18 DR Manuel Margot 19 DR Javier Guerra 18 Pan Victor Acosta 18 VZ Luis Alexander Basabe 17 VZ Rafael Devers 17 DR Dedgar Jimenez 18 VZ Jose Almonte 18 DR Isaias Lucena 19 VZ Roldani Baldwin 18 DR Yoan Aybar 17 DR Daniel Gonzalez 18 VZ Jhonathan Diaz 17 VZ Enmanuel De Jesus 17 VZ
Some of you on this site may have followed the GCL and DSL for a longer period of time. Do you feel this group has more potential than any you have seen? It seems to me there is a lot of exciting prospects in this bunch. (this isn't even mentioning Espinosa and the others we have signed recently).

The experts can start by listing all the 17 y/o position players who have come stateside. Devers, LXB ... anyone at all previously?

I don't has as long a history of following the DSL guys as some on these boards, but I have to say that it looks like Eddie Romero has done a hell of a job signing and developing Latin American talent since he was promoted to international signing director in 2011. Some of it is just from increased coverage of these kids (from this site, better milb.com gameday, Speier's daily roundups, international coverage from BA, etc.), so we hear more about them earlier, but I think a lot of it is also just Romero doing a terrific job of scouting the traditional hotbeds of the Dominican and Venezuela (as opposed to Craig Shipley's emphasis on discovering new markets in Asia-Pacific). It's hard to tell from the outside looking in, but it sure seems like the quality of scouting has just gotten much better since Eddie took over. ADD: here's a great SP article on some of the specific changes that have taken place since Romero's promotion: news.soxprospects.com/2012/07/romero-leading-red-sox-international.html

I have never seen DSL players promoted before this season. Very interesting. It has to be motivating for this kids to see guys like Devers and Basabe be sent state side quickly for what they've have done.
