Was DFA'd by the Marlins earlier today. He has struggled at the MLB level. However, it could be a no-risk, high reward type of move if the Sox claimed or traded for Turner. Maybe he can put it all together with a change in scenery.

No chance he clears waivers or makes it out of the NL (remember, waiver claim priority in this case is all NL teams in order of record followed by all AL teams in order of record).

Maybe he can put it all together with a change in scenery. I think an NL team claims him. Curious if he falls to the Sox and they put one in.

When a player is DFA'd, doesn't the team have 10 days to trade him before he hits waivers?

Once a player is DFA'd, the team generally has ten days to do one of the following things: trade the player, release the player or put the player on waivers and, if he clears, outright the player to the minors. However, after July 31 until the end of the season, a team must place the player on waivers if the player is to be traded.
If the player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player's league gets preference. If no team in the player's league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference.
Therefore, if the DFA'd player is claimed, the team will let him go because the only alternative is to release the player entirely. This is different than if the player were sent through revocable waivers.

Doesn't make much sense to DFA a 23 year old. Has to be something to it, like he's going to be suspended or something similar.

ah ok. I didn't think it would be possible for a 23 year old to be out of options. Because if he's any good, he's not using them, and if he's not, he still isn't.
I don't think he's worth picking up then.

He sure never looked like a top prospect when I saw him pitch. I was surprised with what little stuff he actually had. When the Marlin's got him they were talking what a great deal it was. Anytime they trade with Dave he fleeces them. The kid was rushed so maybe with time someone can fix him. I don't see him as a good pick up for Boston.

Ken Rosenthal ?@ken_Rosenthal 1m Source: #Marlins’ Turner claimed by NL team. Likely to be dealt. Off 40-man due to DFA; can’t be pulled back w/o going on irrevocable wvrs.
Ken Rosenthal ?@ken_Rosenthal 5s #Marlins’ Turner claimed by #Cubs, per @jimbowden_ESPN. Claiming order in reverse order of standings, NL first. Cubs had second crack.

Traded to CHC for two minor leaguers. One is Tyler Bremer (24YO, low-A SP).
