Is Escobar in the mix for the 5th SP spot next year? Innings should be built up more and less, and I don't think Workman/Ranaudo have necessarily shined. This next month in Pawtucket may matter, if the FO sees him as a SP. Nice start tonight for him, though HR still a problem. ...Ranaudo has pitched better than him in AAA and has been fine in his two big league starts. I think it's premature to be drawing conclusions on him, IMO I like Escobar, and I wouldn't be shocked if he found his way onto the team next year, but I think he has some arms on the depth chart to surpass before it happens.

Salem scored 5 in their last AB to sweep. Asuaje ended up 5/9 2HR 3B for the night.
SP lowering Escobar's ceiling from 7 to 5 doesn't bode well.
Lowell broke the string losing their second game in extras 3-2. Mario Alcantara was the goat, adding to a disappointing year.

(EDIT: Answer to the original question re: Escobar in competition for 5th starter) Not really, imo. Even if the Sox acquire just one starting pitcher, he's behind Buchholz, Kelly, & Rubby, who are probably all penciled in right now, and in a competition with Ranaudo, Webster, and Workman that he wouldn't win (by the way, Escobar is at least 2 years younger than all of them). Plus Owens is probably ahead of him, except that the Sox may want him to keep working on things in Pawtucket. Basically, he teeters on the cusp of back-of-rotation starter and reliever. Of course, all that said, I've said the following ad nauseum, but I've got a really hard time believing all of these guys will be around next year, so such projections are probably meaningless.

Jerez. Photo credit: #STH_Photos Jerez got the debut win in the first game in spite of giving both runs in their 3-2 victory.

Jerez got the debut win in the first game in spite of giving both runs in their 3-2 victory. He was charged with two runs that Pinales let score after he left with men on 1st and 2nd and no outs (BB, HB). Given that this was his first time pitching before paying customers, and that he had a 1.2 1 0 0 2 2 line before apparently tiring, not a bad debut (even though two of his outs were OF line drives).

Four BB in two innings is disappointing, though.

Escobar's stats since joining Pawtucket
19 ip 4 ER 16 K 4 BB 18 Hits ERA 1.895 HR/9 .474 K/9 7.579 BB/( 1.895 Whip 1.158
Pretty impressive numbers in a small sample. Still might turn out to be a reliever, but if he is I think he could be a complete pitcher, not just a loogey.
And as stated above, he is still pretty young for that level.

I'm not sure Escobar really is more than a LOOGY-type. He had obscenely large platoon splits this year with the Giants (.188/.239/.208 versus lefties, .334/.395/.603 versus righties), and even in his brief stint with the Pawsox, Escobar has performed much better versus lefties (albeit in a tiny sample): vs. L: 1/8, 3 Ks, 0 BBs, 0 XBH, .125/.125/.125 vs. R: 17/64, 13 Ks, 4 BBs, 8 XBH, .266/.309/.453

He's 22YO in AAA and has time to learn another pitch to use against RHHs.

Sorry, let me re-state. If he becomes a reliever, given his dramatic platoon splits, he would be best served facing as many lefties as possible. If he does significantly improve his performance against righties (which I agree is certainly possible given his age and his reported above-average changeup), I see him sticking as a starter instead.

Mookie had a good night if you don't just go by the boxscore. He was 1/4. His first singled moved a runner from 1st to third. Runner later scored and tied game at 1. Down 2-1 with a runner on 2nd and nobody out in the third. He got a good jump on a ball and made a catch on a ball hit into the right-center gap that was slicing away from him. Runner tug up and went to third. The next batter hit a bloop in front of Mookie where he had to make a running catch and threw the runner out at home. 8-2 double play. Or, is that a JBJ? With the scored tied at 2 in the top of the 8th. Gibson walked. Mookie had a 10 pitch at-bat where Gibson stole second. Mookie moved him to third with a fly ball to right field. Runner scored. I hope we don't trade this kid. He's gonna be a heckuva player. This is great stuff Greg. It's good to hear about Mookie's D improving, because it was poor while he was playing CF in Boston. At the very least, Mookie should provide JBJ insurance, and will probably get a couple hundred at-bats in Boston in 2015 filling in for injuries (or a JBJ slump).
