8/15 ML Gameday Thread: Owens, Rodriguez and Ball pitching
|
Post by chavopepe2 on Aug 15, 2014 19:19:00 GMT -5
Eduardo Rodriguez: 4 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5K
5 of the 6 hits have been singles; three of which were on ground balls.
I love me some ERod and think he's closer to Owens than the crowded group of similar starters in AA/AAA/MLB.

Ball 2.0IP 5H 9R 4ER 4BB 1K 2HRA Portland won 5-1. Game ended on an excellent barehanded play by Almanzar with the bases juiced. He's also the youngest of the 12 upper level starters amfox1 pointed out last week. Salem won 3-2 in 11. Margot 0/4 with 2 Ks in his debut. Lowell won 5-0. Drive down 13-0 after 4. They had a delayed start, presumably weather.

Was at the Sea Dog game tonight and watched Eduardo pitch 6 solid innings. All 1st inning FBs were at 94-96. In the second and third he throttled back to 92/93. From then through the 6th he was back at 94-95 on the Portland gun. As reported, he struck out 7, all but one swinging. The stadium board announced his non-fastballs mostly as change-ups (in the 86-88 range) and a few "splitters" at the same velocity. Regardless, I did not see much break on any. The off-speed pitches did not appear to have a lot of deception either given few, if any, swings and misses. He gave up 8 hits and a number of line-drive outs on the FB altho a couple of hits were bloops or infield grounders. He had a very good 2:1 ratio of strikes to balls and was always around the plate.
My overall impression was that Rodriguez will need to further develop his secondary offerings to succeed up the chain.
Almanzar hit the ball hard numerous times as did KDLK and Blair.

Don't know if it's been suggested yet but with Margot moving up, maybe Mars gets a taste of Low A?

I generally look at all the box scores every night, and it has become increasingly apparent to me that this is the strongest Sox minor league system from top to bottom in a very long time, maybe ever. There are good hitters and pitchers at all levels. There are quite a number of players who appear to have the chance to be considerably better than average, and a number who could be really special.

They have already changed the new player cards to default to show split seasons separately, with an option to combine. That's great.
The Last 10 / Upcoming / Quick Splits sre supposed to to be tabs, not radio buttons. It seems to be a feature set that they haven't coded yet, where they didn't want to hold up rolling out the new pages until they had it working. It's pretty cool on the MLB player cards, and we'll hopefully see it soon.

Daniel Gonzalez with another great outing. 6IP 0R 2H 0BB 3K. I know that it's difficult to take much from stats in the DSL but in his 2 years in the DSL, he's pitched 115 innings with a 20-1 record and 1.79 ERA. He obviously throws strikes with a 96/17 K/BB ratio. He's 18.
Both Ball and Sergio Gomez got smoked at Greenville. They lost 16-4.

His record is 11-1, probably only because he was piggybacking most of last year, but he's been great, it would be interesting to find out some more info on him.

Also, note that for converted pitchers (Oscar Perez, Williams Jerez), you need to go into the URL and change "hitting" to "pitching"

Danr,
I agree this is the strongest minor league system in a long time, but not close to ever, for those who were following the minors around 73- 74- Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Cecile Cooper, Butch Hobson, Rick Burleson, Ben Oglivie, Juan Beniquez (all but the latter became all-stars, and one HOF) and on the pitching side Lynn Mglothen, John Curtis, Dick Pole, Roger Moret

I am not trying to choose one over the other, but am just pointing out some salient facts.

Good point Amfox,
But an interesting question in the larger scheme of things is whether other factors have increased Baseball competition: Due to population increase, global scouting- Asian Players, excepting Murakami, hadn't played here, and now it's expanded to include Korea, Asia, and Europe more. Has the concentration of Latin players/scouting increased- they were a presence, especially on the Pirates, but I believe it has. Lastly, with the salary explosion since then have the number of overall baseball players globally increased. An essay written probably in the '70's cited some of these factors as part of a rationale to put an asterisk on Babe Ruth's lifetime records as opposed to Hank Aaron playing at a time of greater population and diversity..have things continued to expand since?
