Owens and Kukuk clearly plan to end the season with more than 1 strikeout per inning. Can Gunkel join them? Currently at 101 K in 101.2 IP.

Portland clinches a playoff spot with a win or a New Britain loss (because they win a tiebreaker with New Britain).

Portland clinches a playoff spot with a win or a New Britain loss (because they win a tiebreaker with New Britain). New Britain lost the first game of their DH, so Portland has clinched a playoff spot by virtue of its tiebreaker over NBR.

If Ranaudo keeps pitching like this he will be hard to keep of an MLB roster next year.

If Ranaudo keeps pitching like this he will be hard to keep of an MLB roster next year. Ranaudo is now comfortably second in the IL in ERA (2.46) just behind a guy that was traded and won't end up qualified by the end of the year. I just read a story with some quotes by Ranaudo. He said he isn't tired, he in fact is feeling good but he learned from his MLB time that he went through a streak where he was trying to nibble too much with his secondary stuff and that he hasn't been mixing his pitches enough and that he'd be making adjustments.

John Ely with the 3-shutout-inning save. A) Non-roster. Could be traded without waivers. A valuable 8th arm in the pen for a contender. Or: B.) At age 28, AAA playoffs are irrelevant ... bring him up to BOS on 9/1. Leave the core group of arms on the playoff roster.

At age 28, AAA playoffs are irrelevant ... bring him up to BOS on 9/1. Leave the core group of arms on the playoff roster. A plus B works. He's out of options, has no chance of being one of the 12 best pitchers coming out of next year's ST, and hence no chance of being added to our 40-man roster. But there may well be a contender without much pitching depth in AAA who would find him useful as soon as rosters expand. You wouldn't get anything for him, but you'd be rewarding him for a job well done, and hence reinforcing the sense that this is a good place for mlfa's to sign.
