God I hope the first round is on Castillo!
Tremendous year in the bucket even better than 1973 champs(I had season tickets and as a twelve year old found dick pole to be worth a teary belly laugh every time I heard his name).

Of course my main man Couch delivers on a big stage. Kudos on a tremendous year homie, not just for him but for the whole system. As big a failure the MLB team was, the minors really came alive quite well.

So happy for these kids. They earned it. What a year for the minor league affiliates. Wish I could've been back in RI for this series. Seeing the video of the Game 4 comeback/big plays was just incredible.

With the AAA championship not being until Tuesday night, the final game starter could be either Escobar, Owens or Johnson. My preference would be Johnson for a few reasons. He's pitching the best and Tuesday night would be his normal rest night, the PCL has seen Escobar and, Owens looks gassed. If they do start Johnson, I'm hoping that Spring gets the nod behind the plate with Lavarnway as DH.

It's always exciting to see any level of an organization reach the championship level. It saddens me to have missed some of the AA talent reach up to AAA, but it's a great feeling. It was good to see that Rusney also had a chance to gel and get to know some of his future teammates, before he heads off to Boston on Tuesday. Couch came up and made a debut in a clincher and pitched his heart out. Eduardo Rodriguez looked like a very capable future number 2-3 starter with the tight slider and improving change-up. Thank you for a great year.

Tremendous year in the bucket even better than 1973 champs(I had season tickets and as a twelve year old found dick pole to be worth a teary belly laugh every time I heard his name). Mention of the 1973 team brings back great memories for me, too. We didn't have season tickets but we got into the habit of going almost to almost every Friday and Saturday night home game and got to see a number of playoff games, as I recall. What I find surprising is how little information is available about that '73 team. That team went beyond the International League championship and won the Junior World Series, defeating the champs of the other AAA leagues. They beat the Tulsa Oilers, a Cardinals farm team. The b-ref page for the 1973 PawSox doesn't mention this: bit.ly/1uNB90fNor does the PawSox own website. This page makes only a brief mention of it: atmilb.com/1wkKPQVOne distinct memory I have is sitting at my grandmother's kitchen table listening to the first game of the series against Tulsa on the radio and scoring it on a piece of notebook paper. Nothing sweeter than childhood memories of baseball!!

According to tweets:
De Jesus has played 9 regular season games for the PawSox and has 2 championships.
Castillo has been with the Red Sox 22 days and has 2 championships.

Since this is the last MiLB gameday thread of the year ... THANKS, JSINGER! Very much appreciated work you do bringing these to use every day ... You're assuming we are losing ? But thanks jsinger, hoping you have one more day's work. Castillo with a leadoff ground ruled double that would likely have been a triple if it didn't jump the fence. Bulls must have felt bad, they had him picked off second but he avoided the tag in a rundown and got to third. Scored on a De Jesus line drive sac fly. Totally forgot about the One Game For All The Marbles ... Especially satisfying win for the PawSox with essentially all homegrown prospects, not so much on the 29 year-old AAAA players on this team. And, if Rusney Castillo works out, I'm having visions of Rusney, Mookie, and Bogaerts wreaking havoc at the top of the Sox lineup for the next 4-5 years.

To the extent his bat will have value, it will be as a low OBP, high SA guy, not as a top of the order hitter (the conservative prediction at FG was .260 / .308 / .440, which is average CF offense). And that's fine, because steals are actually more valuable in front of single hitters than they are at the top of the order, in front of guys who can just as easily drive you in from first. Every lineup I come up with for the Sox next year has him hitting 9th as the guy who turns the lineup over, although 8 would work, too.

So it would look something like
Mookie Petey cespedes or deal Popi Napoli Xander Middle rooks holt or replacement Vasquez Castillo
Ish?

Of course they aren't going to put the $72 million man 8th or 9th. I'll make another avatar bet that he'll be batting 1st or 2nd.
I think it was the Bulls announcers who mentioned that he was being compared to a young Lenny Dykstra, which would be insanely optimistic, given Dykstra's over .400 OBP in a handful of seasons and a single digit K-rate.

I think having 5 of our 7 minor league affiliates in the playoffs says a lot about the depth of our system.

Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 21m
Edwin Escobar will start for the PawSox in the Triple-A championship game in Charlotte on Tuesday.
According to a MacPherson tweet conversation, the plan is for Castillo to play in Charlotte Tuesday and join the Sox Wednesday.

This is the closest I could find to a view of the Charlotte site, BB&T Ballpark. No dimensions. Omaha up 3-0 and batting in the bottom of the third.

I have Castillo at 7th or 8th. If he bats 8th I like our chances if we also sign some pitchers. I don't see him as a 1 or a 2 almost ever. Maybe when he is hot for a while. So far, he is not staling bases all that well. His added weight might reduce his ability some in that regard.

If he's good, I could see Rusney being a good #6/7 hitter, a guy who has some power to knock in some guys from the middle of the order and then the speed to run around in front of the bottom of the order. Sorta like how Francona was hoping to use Crawford, only Crawford stunk so bad it never worked out. But, honestly, I probably think about batting order less than 90% of Red Sox fans ...

Unrelated but...
Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 1h
Curt Schilling very complimentary about Red Sox LHP Eduardo Rodriguez. He's right. Dude might be the best in a system flush with lefties.
ADD: I also saw a tweet earlier that said Norris took every Castillo plate appearance for Pawtucket on video, I'm guessing we will have a pretty detailed BA evaluation before long.

If that's the conservative prediction, if he bats just a tad better than that (which is likely), he's a top of the order hitter.
