Because of Papi and Pedey, sems as if Sox will look to compete in 2015 rather than continue to let the kids play and learn on the job another year. Buch, Kelly and one of Webster/RDR/Barnes/Ranaudo/Johnson should be respectable 3/4/5 pitchers next yea with others getting experience in bullpen or continuing to be stretched out in AAA.
If Sox are serious in trying to contend in 2015, they need to add at least two veteran starters. Most discussion on this site has focused on resigning Lester, signing Scherzer or Shields and/or trading for Hamels or Cueto. I think Sox will try to resign Lester and I really hope they do, but he has priced himself out of our price/comfort range with his performance this year following incredible Ace pitching postseason performance last year. Signing Scherzer is a fantasy - won't happen with this ownership group.
Rather than signing Shields or trading the farm for Hamels, 'd prefer we try to trade for the next stud young pitcher who hasn't yet earned big bucks like prior trades for Pedro and Beckett and let them earn their spurs on postseason stage with Sox. Not that the targets will be in their talent level, but that have potential 1/2 ceiling.i
Who would you target that has filthy stuff and is 28 years old or younger on a rebuilding team that could use a few of our top 20 prospects?
Chris Sale is obvious target, but will be extremely difficult to pry away from White Sox.
As a Padres tix holder, I will throw out two names: Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross.
Saturday night, Cashner dominated Giants lineup with 96-97 fastball, filthy change and decent curveball. He is another big Texan with gas and reminded me of Beckett in 2003/2007. He has had injury issues, but he is very competitive, is 6'5 no Giant pulled the ball all game, he tripled, laid down a bunt base hit on Panda and almost took out second baseman on a force play at second.
Here is my hoped for 2015 Sox rotation that gets us back to the playoffs:
1. Lester
2. Cashner
3. Buch
4. Kelly
5. Johnson
