I'm surprised this isn't an annual ritual. Let's give it a shot.
Reply to this post (or cut and paste out the player list) and insert the appropriate letter before each player's name. You can add any players ranked 21 and on if you don't think they're an A or a B.
Note that reluctance to trade includes whether you think we'd be selling low (or high), and whether they'll be immediately useful in MLB.
Players who were drafted last year (*) can't be traded until June, but I've included them anyway.
When it looks like everyone interested has voted, I'll translate the grades from 0 to 5 and get a ranking.

I need a little clarification.
Guys that are so far away from the majors like Devers likely wouldn't have much trade value yet so there is literally zero point in trading him. So do I mark him X? I'd gladly give him up if some team thinks he has a Ken Griffey Jr swing. He'd be on a completely different level than Betts or Bogaerts' untouchable rating though.

I think the two most interesting votes so far, in terms of outliers, are jimed giving Cecchini an A, and me giving Escobar a C.
My C for Escobar is based on his potential usefulness to the 2015 team as a LHR, and because of the chance he bounces back and flashes the stuff that made him a top 100 prospect a year ago. I don't want to potentially sell low on a guy who looks to be quite useful if it turns out that isn't the case.
The shock so far is Owen ranking 8th. He seems to be the favorite "let's sell high if we need to get someone like Hamels" choice.
Unsurprisingly, WMB is the most controversial guy.
BTW, I changed a few votes of mine when I put the data into the spreadsheet: Swihart to a D, and Workman and Britton to A (the latter based on my you're the GM thoughts.)

My A for Cecchini is based on my belief that he has way too many questions to answer to become a Daniel Murphy type of player at best. His K rate is alarmingly high for someone who is supposed to have a hit tool as his main strength. His power seemed to improve towards the end of the year but it seems he gave up some contact to get there. His walk rate fell with the disappearing power as I suspected. Granted he is still very young and could turn it around, but he doesn't offer enough value on defense to give him a floor of even a major league bench player. With the lack of power he was showing last year, he needs to significantly improve his contact. Or he needs an ISO of .150 which will help him not have pitchers challenge him as much with pitches in the strike zone.
If some team wants to give us any kind of value for him hoping he bounces back as a top 50 prospect, they can have him. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I don't think his ceiling is worth being super patient. I guess A is probably too harsh.

Don't have an opinion on everyone, sorry. Some notes:
Brandon Workman: I just think he can be a backend starter for some other teams and is very fringy for us, so he should have more value elsewhere.
Bryce Brentz: It's not so much that I care one way or the other if we trade him, it's just that if some other team came knocking for Brentz I would try to talk them into some other outfielders instead.

Swihart: Even if he turns out to be better than Vazquez, Vazquez is the one who will be undervalued by many GMs and Swihart's skillset is something even Ruben Amaro can appreciate. Now I'm not saying you should just give Swihart away, he has a ton of value. But if we need a headliner to trade for an elite player, I'm more comfortable with it being Swihart than Owens or Betts. Owens: There is a decent chance he is undervalued by traditional scouting, I just don't see us getting the right value for him. Margot, Devers: They are so far away we can't rely on them to be superstars, or even make the majors. If some GM out there falls in love with these guys then why not? Rodriguez: Don't really have a strong opinion on him, perhaps I should have abstained instead. Barnes: I don't see why we shouldn't trade him? Pitchers close to the majors are the most common currency in trades and he doesn't seem especially controversial, nor do we lack pitching depth. I mean, maybe I misunderstood what we are rating exactly, I'm assuming here we get reasonable value in return in most cases. |

I took it a different way. I out Devers as an X because I figured there is no way he's a headliner and that's what it'd take for me to trade him so he's untouchable for me... Similar reasoning for Margot
