I always wonder how ppl become fans of expansion teams. I guess i'll never know but ive been watching baseball my whole life, if i didnt have the Sox there is no way i would just be a neutral fan with no team to root for. I do remember early Nats games having nobody in the stands though, i guess like all teams the fans come with the success. Two of the most highly touted prospects in recent memory probably didn't hurt.

Yeah. He's an upgrade to replacement level. I have no idea what Arizona is even trying to do when they came into the season without anything close to a major league catcher. They're not going to contend in 2015, so who cares if they get any offense from their catcher? Honestly, I kind of think they might be better off giving those reps to one of their sub-replacement-level young guys rather than Saltalamacchia, since (a) those young guys have more of a long-term future with the team and would benefit more developmentally from the reps, and (b) their pitchers would likely benefit more from the better pitch-calling/framing young guys than from Salty's good offense/bad defense combo. The major problem here is that you're framing this as a situation where the Diamondbacks are a team that knows what they are doing and have any sort of long term strategy. When you consider the fact that they are awful, poorly run, and totally oblivious to the fact that they stink, then Saltalamacchia is a perfect signing. Anyhow, the only type of team that Saltalamacchia would benefit would be a team that has a) a starting catcher who is excellent defensively and quite durable, and b) a manager who is willing to use his backup catcher as a pinch hitter when appropriate. Saltalamacchia is a below-average major league starting catcher, but he's a pretty good backup for a team whose starter has complementary skills.

Will Middlebrooks, who got off to something of a hot start with the Padres, has totally crashed back to early. He's 2 for his last 32 without an extra base hit, and 0 for his last 19. His season line is down to .191/.230/.340. Amazingly, that gives him an OPS 48 points higher than he had in 2014. Since the start of 2013, only three players with more than 700 plate appearances have a lower wRC+: J.P. Arencibia, Darwin Barney, and Melvin Upton.

Tampa is having even more bad luck than the Sox. Drew Smyly now has to have TJ surgery.

Tampa is having even more bad luck than the Sox. Drew Smyly now has to have TJ surgery. Actualy it's a labrum tear, and they're going to try to rehab it first. You may be getting him crossed up with Cobb, who does need TJ. But yeah, both done for the year. Tampa's done.

Can we get some more hot takes on how Cherrington "sold low" on Middlebrooks and right handed power is super valuable and important? I propose that now is the time for people to bring that up.

Maybe he could have traded him to Seattle for Pineda before the Yankees sold high on Montero.

Kluber strikes out 18 Cardinals in eight innings, with 0 walks and 1 hit.
I know he was at 113 pitches through eight and it was a tight 2-0 game at that point, but you HAVE to let him at least start the ninth and try and get the record, right?
ADD: I guess you could say the same thing about Pineda and his 7 IP, 16 K game, and maybe it's not worth the risk. But I've always thought if it's a potentially historic event like that, you gotta at least give them a shot.

I shouldn't watch Lester pitch. Even with his contract it makes me want to see him every 5th day for the Sox.

Miggy with his 400th today. Turned 32 last month. Decent chance he hits 500 before his 35th birthday. Can he make a run at 700?

As a long-time believer in Shelby Miller I am feeling vindicated. Miller (signed through '18) is looking like a pretty smart buy.
