He is so good, the reads are just uncanny and the arm is a cannon. Obvious that the baserunners at second who had to return to first and were subsequently thrown out assumed that the balls were un-catchable. That one thing tells you how extraordinary the skills are, that his peers would be misjudging things so badly.
Add: Before he grabbed hold of the leadoff spot, there was talk of Betts heading back to Pawtucket where he might have been the starter at second base. Think about that up the middle lineup for a second: Swihart, Marrero and Betts, Bradley. How many better defensive alignments are there in the majors?

He never seemed to lose track of the runners on, and was so quick to get the ball back in, even when he is coming up from a dive or a slam into the wall. That play against the Yankees when he hosed down Ellsbury going to third before Beltran could score was fantastic.

BP's Al Skorupa is at Pawtucket game and reporting that E. Rodriguez is hitting his spots with 95 mph (T-97) The PawSox offense is scary right now. Except for that double header they took off, they've been mashing so far this season. They've already put up an 11-spot through 6 today.

Yes, when your best prospect is hitting a Ted Williams .406 in AAA, and a "bust" prospect gold glove centerfielder is only hitting .329, then you're doing pretty well. (And your best pitching prospect has a 2.3 ERA in AAA.)

Very true... although today's lineup looks a little more like a traditional AAA team, with a few prospects (Swihart, JBJ, Coyle) surrounded by AAAA depth guys. Doesn't change the point at all, though, just points out that the team is deep, too. Swihart is making an early case that, if anything, he's been underrated.

I know it's sort of early, but when do we start the "Nick Longhi is a legit prospect" bandwagon?

I think he has been a legit prospect for a while now. He's just been in a deep system so lower level guys go a bit unnoticed.

I know it's sort of early, but when do we start the "Nick Longhi is a legit prospect" bandwagon? Should be Yesterday. Lightning quick hands. Its a mystery why STravis is ranked higher? Not to mention 25 year old TShaw who is nothing more than bench/injury depth at the major league level.. The HIT scouting write up on his Player page reads "solid average bat speed can struggle with plus velocity". I ask who came to that conclusion? The half dozen games I took in when he played at Lowell showed a very different approach. 3 SP in those games were hitting 90 92 with the fastball. Longhi had no problem fighting those pitches off and putting them in play. This is why I stated, I thought he had better bat speed than Travis, who seemed to strike out when Longhi would make contact.. I understand expectations can change. It would be curious to know when that scouting report was written on his player page? 6 of 13 hits for extra bases. Age 19. This Player should be at the very least in the Top 20 if not the Top 15.

These rankings were published at the start of the season. I have no doubt they'll be adjusted upward for Longhi, to account for his good start, in the next version.

Longhi's scouting report was updated in February in a collaborative effort by those who'd seen him in Lowell, the GCL, and Fall Instructs, and cross-referenced those reports with other scouts who saw him. We saw Longhi in Spring Training as well after that report and my understanding is that none of us felt the need to update the report quite yet. He's not a bad prospect. As mentioned earlier, in a system with less depth, he'd be a bigger deal. He's a guy we like a lot, but for example, hitting behind Chavis and Devers this spring, there was a clear difference in the batspeed. For what it's worth, saying that he had to fight off 90-92 does nothing to disprove the notion that he'd struggle with plus velocity. 90-92 is not plus velocity. He's had a very nice start to the season. I hope it continues. We're not jumping him 10 spots in the rankings based on two weeks of games though.

Watched video of his two HR's on Greenville website last one went off top of batters eye in dead centerfield. Looked like pretty good bat speed to me.

I still have him behind Doubon and Ramos, and probably Mercedes. Maybe he's better than Shaw? He just doesn't have the high ceiling to make him all that crazy exciting for me. I'm intrigued by his stats though, and hope he can keep it going.
