Light's K-Rate in Salem last year was 4.5 57 k's in 115 innings. Good news for Trey Ball and his 5.7 k rate this year.

Chaz Fiorino Chaz Fiorino Jun 14 #RedSox Pat Light electric stuff out of pen. FB 95-96,T98 w/ a 70 grade split at 85-87.1ip, 2K's. Picked up 1st K on 3-2 splitter; filthy. 70 grade splitter is Tanaka territory. See for yourself. That splitter is nasty. Marrero is laughing in disbelief after the pitch.

From that article, double plus movement on his fastball... That's new. Wasn't his fastball always criticized as straight?

From that article, double plus movement on his fastball... That's new. Wasn't his fastball always criticized as straight? Yeah, it's still noted on his SP.com fastball. To be fair, the double-plus movement in the BP article references his fastball's vertical movement, while the past references to a straight fastball might refer more to his horizontal movement. It's also possible that moving to the BP lets him air it out a little more and get more spin.

Wow, so happy for Pat Light reading that. Hes certainly went through rough patches, but for people to believe in him and tag a 60 FV on him is truly incredible. Really great he's taken to relieving so well and has found his way, if not in the manner he had planned. I hope he's our closer one day.

He still needs work on his control, likely command, too. See his 6/21 appearance when he gave up 3 BB's (no K's), 2H and 2ER.
But yeah, that is a very encourging report from Skorupa.

Even major league players have trouble hitting an elevated 95+ fastball, right? I'd hope that every pitch is either an elevated fastball or splitter in the dirt.

Well Ian said its flat when up in the zone. I'm sure that when Light is on (excuse that pun), he is keeping the ball down, and the movement is improved down low. It wouldn't shock me if Light is inconsistent and has good and bad days. Still just a baby in the world of relieving.

He needs quite a bit of work on his control and consistency.
Remember when he called up to Pawtucket and some people thought he'd be there a few weeks for a time-up and then be called up rescue the Sox BP woes? He still needs work. Still needs reps. Still needs to show more consistency. At AAA.

Interesting comment from the Red Sox guys at Saberseminar: Pat Light wasn't necessarily told not to throw his split in the pros - the player development guys helped him develop it from a change of pace pitch in college to the weapon it is now, and it really locked in the second half of last year. Once he showed that, they moved him to relief. A little bit of a different story than we've heard before.
