Allen Craig and Rusney Castillo and Edward Mujica say hi. They first decided that Masterson was the odd man out. Kelly then won the 5th starter competition, making Wright the 6th starter and long man. When Masterson's rehab was up, they indefensibly optioned Wright instead of Robbie Ross, thinking that the downgrade at low-leverage long reliever was worth the depth they retained and the decent chance that Masterson might show enough effectiveness in the long man role that he'd ultimately be worth keeping as a ROOGY rather than eating his salary. Then Kelly crapped the bed and suddenly they're starting their 7th (at best) starter Masterson in a key intradivisional game while the unquestionably better 6th starter is waiting for his 10 mandatory option days to pass. Picture's in the dictionary next to "botch."

You're being too charitable to the Sox because you forgot that they could have recalled Wright as the countermove for Pedroia to the DL.

I buy the "can't start Johnson on three days' rest" argument. I just wish they'd given the extra start to Kelly instead of Masterson. I don't buy it, because they could have prevented Johnson from pitching. This wasn't unexpected.

I don't buy it, because they could have prevented Johnson from pitching. This wasn't unexpected. Johnson was pitching the next day (in a day game, no less), and they could well have not made up their mind yet. If it's just one Masterson start and Johnson takes his place the next time around, it's really not worth arguing about. If it's multiple Masterson starts, though, that's when the decision-making process starts looking suspect.

Unless Masterson goes out and pitches really well with 6K's and no BB's in 5 innings. Didn't get to watch the game so I have no idea about velo or whether he was hit hard. But the numbers look nice. Certainly makes the decision a little harder. Although Kelley looked good today and Wright looked great a couple days ago. Someone will get traded.

Velo was unchanged -- averaged 89.0 versus 88.8 previously, maxed 91.7. It's hard not to think of Kelly putting up a 4.95 xFIP and 6.97 ERA in the three starts after he won the competition with Wright with a 3.26 / 1.50. I'm not sure they'll trade anyone, since they could really use Kelly in the pen, if he proves to be better there. Some guys seem to need to pitch much more often in order to keep their mechanics and hence command consistent.
