Is anyone else worried that the Sox don't have a catcher coming up the system behind Swihart? I mean a guy who could eventually ride the Pawtucket shuttle even. A Fed-X/Exposito/DBrown/Butler type would be nice.
On the one hand, I'm talking replacement level guys who can be had, but on the other, it's nicer to have that guy with some upside and/or options. I mean, maybe Swihart ends up as just that (would be too bad), but otherwise, they're going to need to produce a catcher or two in the next few years, at least to ride the shuttle if not the Boston pine.

Romanski and Procyshen are both guys that fit the type of Dan Butler-level that you refer to. Lower in the minors, there's Austin Rei of course. Also heard Sox might have a Puerto Rican kid coming off the DL next season. So no, not worried.

Fisher looks like he could be a serviceable backup in time. Vazquez and Swihart are a great young pair, I'm not worried.

I didn't realize we were that high on Romanski and Procyshen. I guess we talk about them less because we seem settled long term at C (yes, I know Vasquez is back next year). Butler was like, a legitimate guy to talk about in his day because were so desperate for an heir apparent for Tek. I suppose I'll have to look into those two more, but would also love to read more about them here or in the scouting pieces.

The Sox could always sign a Quintero type for the depth catcher at AAA, if needed. I mean, sure, it's better if you have Swihart at AAA like they did this year, but they'll be fine for a few years here as they try to get other catchers moving in the system.

The issue for me is the flexibility of a guy with options. Rather than having like, 8 catchers moving through the system as we've had this year. Plus, it's nice if the guy can catch some of our pitchers in ST to get at least a little feel for them before being pressed into action. That said, you're right, seems there are plenty of catch and throw guys to go around even at the MLB level if the immediate availability this year says anything.

Mike Antonellis @seadogsradio Miguel Celestino has been traded to the Cincinnati Reds I thought Cueto would take more, but I like it!

Could see it, shortstop has to run a long way into no-man's land down the LF line, with his momentum taking him the other way and a fast runner on third?
When I was working at Brown, the baseball team won the Ivy title and the only run scored in the first game of the championship series was on a sac fly to the second baseman. Same thing.
Elsewhere, speaking of second basemen, Wendell Rijo left the Salem game in the fourth with some sort of leg injury.

The runner must have been Basabe, who has good speed and stole his 5th base yesterday.

Play-by-play says Benintendi had a sac fly to SS. That's pretty interesting No big deal. In youth baseball we teach runners on 3rd with < 2 outs to tag whenever an infielder turns his back to the infield or takes a route that is at least perpendicular to the line of a throw to the plate when chasing down a pop fly. Another reason why we teach the OF to call off the IF and make the catch whenever possible. Baseball 101.

I'm guessing the shortstops in the youth baseball league you're referring to don't have professional-caliber arms yet.
