Why sign mop up relievers? If you're going into selling mode, you may need some mop up guys as replacements.

Belisario has a career 3.26 SIERA (3.31 since 2013), and ZiPS/Steamer project him to be a 3.86 ERA pitcher going forward. That's not great (AL league average for relievers is 3.54), but it's probably an upgrade on who they currently have.

“@jonheymancbs: ronald belisario is signing with red sox” Oh Yipeee...Bells and whistles. We really need a 5.56 ERA reliever to help fan the flames. where were they when the Rangers DFA'd Neftali Feliz? Out to lunch as usual, so the Tigers picked him up and who did the Sox get for Celestino. It just says he was traded....Oh...ok. Duh...For who?

The same Neftali Feliz who hasn't thrown more than 40 innings in a season since 2011 or had a SIERA/xFIP under 4.00 since 2010? The guy whose velo has dropped from 96 in 2011 to 93 this season? One of the few guys who can say they've been almost as bad as Craig Breslow over the last two years? That's the guy you want?

I remember the Sox lighting him up when he pitched for the White Sox.

"Contract terms are unknown at this time, and the team has yet to announce the signing."
gotta wonder if it is a minor league deal with a player opt out.

Neftali Feliz 2015 Texas Rangers $ 4,125,000 Tigers waiver claim puts them on the hook for the remainder of that. Belisario was a free agent, cleared waivers. Sox: pay minimum
EDIT: Feliz wasn't claimed by Tigers. See post below.

Feliz wasn't claimed by Detroit. He cleared waivers, elected free agency, and was then signed to a major league contract.
Belisario's peripheral stats are ok, but the K rate since 2013 doesn't really do much to get my hopes up. 14.8% at Durham? Meh. If it's a minor league deal and the team thinks it sees something that's cool, but I'm not optimistic.

Those one game sample sizes are always spot on well...He pitched for the dodgers originally and was a pretty good option out of the pen a few years ago and then went south and the Dodgers traded him to some other team, but I can't remember which one off the top of my head, but he has gone downhill ever since. feliz has had a number of injuries and couldn't stay on the field, but he seems to have straightened that out and the Tigers may have something in him. It is too early to say for sure, but I think they should have taken a flyer on Feliz over Bellasario.

I read the link where it said that he has a 60.9 groundball rate an most assuredly will keep the ball on the ground. Isn't that what they said about Porcello?

Hinojosa can't be that bad to have some washed up player take his roster space?

Johnson is taking Hinojosa's 40-man roster spot. If Hinojosa gets claimed or traded, Belisario might take his spot in the PawSox bullpen, but it's not an either/or proposition - ideally, Hinojosa clears and gets outrighted without regard to Belisario's roster status.

People jumping on the Feliz bandwagon need to check out the suspension on that thing. I've watched Feliz pitch, and more than once. The fastball is way down. I don't think he's ever fully recovered from the injury.

Loved Belisario's work on "Quantum Leap," "Magnum P.I." and JAG. Great org guy.

I personally feel that they have done too much drawing straws for relievers trying to find that diamond in the rough that just doesn't work out for them. they are going to have to get a reliable reliever that is proven. I don't know where they will get them, but this avenue hasn't worked to their advantage.

It's not like there's any opportunity cost to this move, especially if it's a minor league deal.
