Note that there's an open spot on the 25-man roster and pitching staff that will be used to call up Kelly or Wright (or, theoretically, Aro, Escobar, or Ramirez).

Henry Owens is a less ridiculous option than Justin Masterson, so perhaps you should list him in the poll. Anyway, clearly the sensible options at this time are Johnson, Kelly and Wright, and I'm probably going to be the only one not voting for Johnson. I think Wright is clear-cut and the other two are close.

I mean, if you really can't stand the thought of waiting 2 turns of the rotation until the trade deadline before actually trading for a pitcher (or not), who's even going to be available?
Bucket of baseballs for Aaron Harang? Sure, you could do that, but why would you prefer him over the 2nd-best of Wright/Kelly/Johnson?
Scott Kazmir? Billy Beane won't mind trading early, but Kazmir's not going to come cheap, and he's strictly a half-year rental. Is a ~20% chance of making the divisional series good enough to spend serious trade chips? I guess this kind of move would at least keep fan interest up.
Perhaps Jesse Chavez as the middle ground between the two aforementioned approaches? At least the projections like him better than Joe Kelly. Hisashi Iwakuma is a similar option.
Chris Sale? Sure, sign me up. Wait... they want what?

Does the person who voted after me want two trade acquisitions? LOL.

Maybe I missed it, but was there ever an update on Joe Kelly's forearm?

Said this is the minor league thread a few days ago, but I think I want Johnson/Owens. Masterson is not an option. Kelly has no command. I know Owens still has to work on his, but scouting reports make it sound more 40-45 than the 30 or whatever command that Kelly has, and a 70 changeup is pretty forgiving. I like that the Ks are coming back and the walks are going down, and it sounds like this slider might be a useful 3rd pitch.
Wright is the other option I'm torn on, but I like his fit as a spot starter/long reliever if necessary. I'm also not confident that Farrell would use him in the role that would maximize his value. Somebody has mentioned this before, but a Wright/Kelly tandem starting spot could be awesome.
I know Owens won't get any consideration because of development/40 man issues (on the other hand, Craig Breslow is on the 40 man), but I think he might be the best option right now.

Maybe I missed it, but was there ever an update on Joe Kelly's forearm? Wondering the same exact thing. I may have missed what ailed Brian Johnson that one start also. Pawtucket is being very secretive lately. LOL. I still want Kelly in a relief role for the 2nd half. The pen is just as big of a problem. I voted for Johnson and Wright. Masterson will probably give us some positive results in relief. I think Kelly could really help coming in for an inning or two. Super excited about watching Johnson get a shot. This season will end up as a positive even if we don't make the playoffs, if we were able to develop TWO young starters and get Miley and Porcello consistent (in a positive way!). In their own ways presently they are consistent. I'm looking for a different definition.

I thought about including Owens, but between his obvious continuing inconsistency and the need to add him to to the 40-man*, I think that's not a viable option. Doing that and leaving Wright in the pen or in AAA would be hard to defend.
*Breslow and Masterson may be dead weight, but they need to acquire two good relievers.
In any case, we can can calculate the number of apparent Owens votes by counting folks who voted for only one option. It's 3 so far.

I'm for Wright and a trade candidate. Not sure WHO is worth trading for, but I think I prefer that route. EDIT: not trading for a 1 year rental; more of a long term trade where a higher cost is paid.

The Sox have too many holes this season. They need 3 trades to get back into contention. Keeping that in mind I want to see how Johnson and Wright pitch for awhile. I am curious how they do in the big leagues. Clay may be back in 4-6 weeks as well. I like Kelly as our 7th inning pitcher of the future.

I guess Masterson's mother voted in this poll?

First four Pawtucket starters coming out of the break have been announced as Couch-Kelly-Owens-Spruill. So they've bothered to announce Kelly, meaning it likely won't be him, and haven't announced Wright as the fifth starter, which makes me think he's at least a potential option.

Sweet, I was looking for those since this is their one trip to Durham this year. Thanks.

I voted Johnson and Wright. Might as well see what they can do. Masterson isn't really a major league pitcher these days and once Kelly is healthy, he needs to be in Pawtucket working out his issues.
With the Sox on the outer fringe of the race, I don't want to see them devote precious resources for another starter. I'd rather see the Red Sox work on overhauling their entire pitching staff in the offseason when free agency can be a tool they can use, so that they don't have to trade their best young players for a top-of-the-rotation starter.

I guess Masterson's mother voted in this poll? BREAKING NEWS from CNN: Pope Francis who is a big supporter of the downtrodden decided to cast a vote for Justin Masterson.

Now that the team has decided, the poll is locked. We had it right.
Looks like there were 7 votes for Owens and 1 for two trade acquisitions.
Meanwhile, I thought they'd want to use a 6th starter versus the Tigers, rather than have Johnson make his second MLB start against a team that crushes LHP, but if tonight's game gets rained out, that will be a necessity on the 24th. They could call up Kelly (optioning Ross or DFAing Breslow) and have him pitch on 6 days rest, or go with Masterson. If they did call up Kelly, they could obviously leave him in the pen.
